laura: how important is it the fact that the u.s. and russians seem to have worked together closely to get this agreement? >> it is extremely important in terms of dealing with syria. there are several combinations that are required. a lotst important without of hubris attached to it is the u.s.-russian peace but there is a u.s.-iranian piece and a saudi-iranian peace. that is what diplomacy is all about. laura: what about president bashar al-assad, no mention of him specifically in this resolution. what is to stop him from standing for election in 18 months time? ambassador pickering: it is a long while to 18 months and elections. i would be more concerned about the necessity to start the process. up till recently there was a problem. the syrian opposition did not want to have a situation where a sawed was around when they started talking. the saudis have been helpful in getting over that hump as has the move on the part of the u.s. with the russians. we are in a position where dr. henry kissinger said months ago we would have to ha
