laura anthony is live at the san bruno rec center serving as the main evacuation center. laura, how are people coping now? >> kristen, that's right. this is the veterans memorial rec center. people seem to be coping okay. actually there are about 15 folks sleeping here on the floor above me. obviously we don't want to bother them at the moment. what's going on down here, volunteers are gathering goods to help not only those people but all of the victims and folks who have been evacuated and perhaps have lost their homes. they're getting ready for an opening here this morning to allow folks to come here who aren't maybe staying here but need help with a variety of services. now, of course we're talking about all of the victims of this incredible fire storm really that happened last night. more than 170 homes affected. some of the folks we've talked with last night were pretty sure theirs were one of the ones that was lost. >> what happened to your house? >> it's gone. >> do you know that? >> it was right there. it happened right across the street from my house. so, i mean,

live in san bruno, laura anthony. >> laura, thank you very much.the fir instantly knocked out power in the area for 5,000 pg&e customers. this morning pg&e says they've managed to get the lights back on for all but 700 customers. three at&t cellphone towers affecteded by the outage are also back up and running on emergency power. the fire's affecting some schools in san bruno. the park school district says its elementary and middle schools will be closed today. also the district's special education site will be closed; however, cappuccino high school will be open and will offer grief counseling to any student. many members of the san bruno community have gathered to help out the emergency responders. mark matthews is live at bay hill shopping center on cherry avenue with the very latest from there. mark? >> yeah. this is a staging center for the red cross. you can see their big van. we're expecting city and fire officials come here. we've been watching trucks roll up to the scene. we're two miles from where it happened. videotape from those trucks,

abc 7's laura anthony spoke to people living near some of the riskiest sites. >> pipeline 210-a may beumber one on the high-risk list but the fire chief isn't quite sure where it runs. like so many fire and city officials, he found deciphering pg&e's list and its limited information a challenge. >> maybe they can tell us what that list means. >> in cordelia work to upgrade the troubled line is already underway. but in other bay area cities where it's four years away. one line runs near a popular shopping center on the border and milpitas. one feet from a town home. and an insurance company with 1,000 employees. company officials contacted pg&e. >> for us knowing we're close to this intersection, naturally we want to get more answers to some of these questions. >> pg&e's chris john says companies and the public shouldn't be overly concerned if a particular line appears on the list. >> whenever we identify any potential threat to public safety, we immediately go and address the situation. we don't put it on some list. it's not on some list of a hundred. >> are you surprised it was on the
