"abc 7 news" reporter laura anthony picks up coverage tonight. >> reporter: it is a fire that's grownmendously in just 24 hours, and one that shows no signs of letting up. with flames at least 50 feet in the air. burning with abandon through trees and dry brush in rural mariposa county as the detwiler fire approaches 50,000 acres. >> the fire is still spreading? >> absolutely. as of this morning we only had 7% containment. >> reporter: along highway 49 in rural county, the detwiler fire left its mark. the orange skies, the ground charred and smoldering for miles in every direction. and down the road, the town of mariposa stands silent and mostly deserted as its 2200 residents have been ordered to stay away for a second day. with flames closing in on two sides, the residents of colterville were given an emergency evacuation order. >> be safe. >> got the animals all packed up. we are waiting on the neighbors to follow us down now. >> i'm not going to worry about it. i'm alive. i mean i'm not going to stay there for it to get to me. we'll come back, we'll rebuild if it happens. >> colter

. >> abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live at the federal courthouse in san francisco. she has more now on what the judge had to say. laura? >> reporter: this hearing just wrapped up this afternoon here in san francisco. all the major players inside the courtroom. federal judge felton henderson told the city of oakland and its police department that its long history of federal oversight is far from over. he told city leaders and attorneys for all sides, the sex abuse scandal shows we're still not finished after 14 years of reforming this department. the hearing comes after an independent report found then oakland police chief sean wentz and top city officials including mayor schaaf were inept in their handling of a sex scab dndal involving a teenage girl. >> as you all know, the judge has not made a ruling, but he will make a ruling in a couple of days. and from there, we will have a clear direction about how opd will become the best agency that we can be. >> we want the court to put in the order that there has to be an investigation, and to the actual roles and conduct

laura anthony is live tonight with details on an unsolved murder from last october. laura? >> reporter: despite the passage of time, police here still don't know whether jim gilliland was targeted or a random victim. now they're hoping to generate a break in the case. >> it's the reality. sometimes there aren't great leads. >> reporter: nearly nine months after civil attorney jim gilliland was gunned down in front of his home, police are no closer to finding his killer, despite having surveillance video of cars in the neighborhood the night of the murder. >> we don't know what we're looking for yet. in the event that somebody can identify a suspect for us, then we can look for that car in those videos. >> reporter: he was shot multiple times on his front porch last october. though there were no signs of a robbery, investigators can't rule it out. nor can they say for certain whether the 62-year-old attorney was targeted, or the victim of a random attack. >> he was loved. not only by his friends and colleagues, he was universally liked. even opposing counsel would talk about

laura anthony has the story. >> they've been to court almost every single day to support shamille. >> reporter: for one family, it's another difficult chapter in their life when they lost shamille in a gun battle. >> this is a lose-lose situation for everybody, particularly for the pierce family. in essence, we have a mother who is doing everything she can do protect her kids. >> reporter: in march 2015, the 30-year-old pierce was near her home with two of her three children when a gun battle broke out between two groups of men. pierce died trying to shield her kids. 32-year-old jerry harbin becomes the fourth sentenced in her death. he pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 13 years in prison. at the sentencing, the prosecutor read a statement from pierce's sisters -- >> reporter: later, the defendant harbin turned and spoke directly to the victim's family.
