brown. appreciate it. i want to bring in the panel. carl bernstein, david gergen, paul cal lesson, lauramichael, let's put this into perspective for us. what does this mean for the mueller investigation? >> well, what it means is that he's indicted somebody. we don't know whether it's to the core charge of collusion or whether it's to the collateral charge of money laundering or tax evasion. we can surmise from pamela's reporting if it was andrew wise man who was at the courthouse who was returning the indictment, wise man has been on the manafort case and that it therefore might beological to conclude that it is manafort. manafort has been under scrutiny for both collusion and also for his real estate dealings and for tax and money laundering investigatio investigations. so you could have an investigation of manafort separate from the collusion but which implicates his dealings with the monies that he earned in ukraine and elsewhere over seas. >> jeff, is what's your take on this from a legal standpoint? >> well, it's a peculiar situation because indictments are rarely announced without

pamela brown, let's bring in our legal panel, we have laura coates, justice correspondent evan perez and legal han lift jeffrey toobin. thanks one and all for being here. we've just learned that manafort and gates will remain in house arrest. what's your take on the events? do you think they are in real legal trouble? >> oh, they are in desperate legal trouble. the sentences have gotten much higher in white collar crime in recent years, and the real question is whether either of them or both of them will want to plead guilty and cooperate. the other thing that's quite clear from an indictment of this complexity, it's 31 pages, is that it will not go to trial if it goes to trial at all probably for at least six months. that's just how the -- the pace at which the criminal justice system works in federal court, so that means mueller investigation will be going on at least through the middle of 2018 and perhaps much longer since these are just the first -- the first charges that he's brought, so this is not the beginning of the end of the mueller investigation. this may only be the end

laura: and we can see the devastation behind you. how is the governor of california responding to the situation? dave: well, jerry brown was very quick to declare a state of emergency in three counties, and to several more counties, and he also asked for extra presidential help, releasing funds and allowing california to bring in more resources from around the country. that request has been granted, so we will start seeing very soon more resources coming to deal with containment of the fire. so far they have not been able to do it particularly effectively. the priority has been getting people safe and not containment, but of course, as the fire is still growing, the priorities that most people who need to be evacuated have been evacuated , the next step is to make sure the fires don't go further from where they are now. laura: dave lee in santa rosa, thank you for joining us. earlier i spoke to a former firefighter and resident of santa rosa who lost his home in the blaze. i asked him about the moment the fire started approaching. >> i got woken up by a neighbor, actually. he knew i was a former firefighter, and he sai
