. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. two quakes sent people scrambling this morning. a series of aftershocks followed including one that measured 8.2. numerous tsunami warnings were issued but canceled several hours later. ian williams has reaction to the quakes that rattled nerves. >> reporter: the u.s. pacific tsunami early warning center has canceled its alert for the indian ocean, that's been grant r greeted with enormous relief after the 2004 quake and tsunami that killed more than a quarter of a million people. >> i was sitting in the chair and the chair -- i thought it was shaking and the office people were running out, screaming and everybody was screaming that it was an earthquake happening. >> reporter: tall buildings swaying in bangkok and singapore. 300 miles from the epicenter, terrified people ran to the streets. it was followed by a massive aftershock, almost as strong as the original quake thankfully there are no reports of widespread casualties or damage. experts say the quake so powerful what they called a lateral quake, meaning the movement was side

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live with the latest. christie? >> reporter: good morning to you. right now police have several streets blocked off around cleveland, and i can tell you there is a very heavy police presence out here this morning. they're asking the media to stay back just a little bit because some people in a home claim to be armed. they're hold up in a home after a stabbing that termed fatal this morning. san jose police investigators tell us just before 2:00 this morning they got a call of a stabbing victim down in the 200 block of cleveland. that man was taken to santa clara valley medical center where he died. then people in the house where the 911 call came from locked themselves in and refused to cooperate with police. and then started claiming they had guns and they held up in the house. police say they have no reason to belie

i'm jon kelley. >> marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. man was found shot on the street earlier this morning and rushed to the hospital. he's now been pronounced dead. christie smith joins us live from oakland with an update. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah. unfortunately that man who was shot here in west oakland, he was taken to highland hospital. he was pronounced dead there. within the last ten minutes or so, we have seen three homicide investigators arrive here on scene. they are getting briefed by the investigators that were already here. we have seen them looking at fences and they looked at the back tire of the truck there. trying to piece together what happened here. really taking a close look at the crime scene. there are four evidence markers in the middle of the street. also a shoo-in the street, we can see now it is daylight here at 40th. overnight police say that they got a call before 4:00 a.m. of a man down in the street but a sarge entells me sergeant tells me they have few witnesses. detect

. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. it is a big day for ross mirkarimi has he takes another step toward getting his job back. a look at today's ethics commission hearing. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. well, ross mirkarimi tried to get this resolved in the courtroom to get his job back as san francisco sheriff. but a judge didn't agree with the arguments he was presenting. so now the whole thing heads here to san francisco city hall where it will go before an ethics commission, which will begin by trying to figure out the whole process and protocol for this hearing that starts at 4:30 this afternoon. mirkarimi was only sworn in in early january days after an altercation with his wife. he pleaded guilty to a domestic violence intervention class. but ed lee stepped in to suspend him without pay. the plan initially calls for written briefs from both sides and then later it could include testimony for the whole thing could take weeks. earlier, mirkarimi's attorney told us it seems kind of v

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. the search for sierra lamar continues this morning on land and water. divers returning to handful of morgan hill ponds as volunteer groups comb the surrounding areas for clues. bob redell live in the gathering spot for the searches. what's going on out there? good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, the sierra search center volunteer effort being run by the polly klaas organization. volunteers will be on the ground searching the south county for signs of sierra lamar. she has been missing over a month now. the sheriff's department will be back on the water with their scan sonar, yellow device we will be seeing in the video there. they will be looking for clues. investigators started their search of local bodies of water earlier in the week. they tell us they still have four more ponds to check this morning. these are ones located off monterey road. then they will be off to other locations. this week the sheriff's office said they developed new leads after receiving it

i'm john kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon.ice are looking for a would be-robber whose foiled by a gas station employee in oakland. it happened at this station near coliseum way. a woman walked into the station pulled out a gun and demanded money. the employee wrestled the gun away from her. she ran away without any money. also new, a wild accident in the east bay, take a look at this. incredibly, though, the driver is going to jail. no the the hospital, though. an suv slammed into a concrete divider on southbound 880 in oakland near the broadway exit. happened about 3:00 this morning. the vehicle slipped over the divider and burst into flames. it came very close to tumbling off the highway and down that 40-foot drop you saw there. here's the thing, the driver was only slightly hurt. he told police another driver cut him off forcing him to crash. no other cars were involved and the driver's being held on suspicion of drunk driving charges. >>> students at oikos university at oakland returning to class this morning three weeks a

i'm laura garcia-cannon in for jon kelley. >> and i'm marla tellez. happening right now, the national attention over the trayvon martin shooting moves into a florida courtroom. in just the last few minutes, george zimmerman, the man who admits to killing the unarmed teenager, makes his first appearance after being charged with second-degree murder. jay gray is live in sanford, florida, with the latest for us. >> reporter: good afternoon, marla. a very brief court appearance by george zimmerman, his first in this case after being charged and arrested late yesterday. he walked into the courtroom this afternoon spending less than three minutes there, flanked by a sheriff's deputy and his lawyer, only responding "yes, sir" when he answered the judge as to the question of whether he understood the charges and that he understood he had the right to remain silent. it was purely procedural here. after zimmerman left the courtroom, his attorney, mark o'mea o'meara, asked the judge to seal all the records in the case. >> i am seeking on my client's behalf and j

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marla tellez. a tsunami watch is in effect after a launch earthquake off indonesia's western province. it's a magnitude 8.6 quake. it hit just before 2:00 a.m. our time with several aftershocks. since then, including an aftershock measuring 8.2. >> that tsunami watch is issued for many countries in the indian ocean, including malaysia, pakistan, even as far as the east coast of africa. local television cameras caught people rushing out of the buildings after the quake. quite amazing to see, no doubt the panic that ensued after the 8.6 quake was triggered. most of the people trying to run for cover and instantly running. they had a quake there back in 2004 that was rather large and killed over 200,000 people. we have to talks to folks from the usgs a little later about the similarities between the two quakes and where we could be when it comes to that tsunami watch. >> officials are actually saying this quake lasted almost four minutes long. >> right. >> that is a very long time, certainly, if you'v

. >> and i'm marla in this morning for laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning, welcome back, marla, we sure missed you. we've got fog out there this morning that could slow you down. right now, we have the densest of the fog up in the north bay. about 1/4 mile visibility up in santa rosa, but we expect these numbers to continuously fall throughout the next few hours. 70s, i'll let you know when the 80s return on my seven-day forecast. first, 4:31, let's check your drive with mike. >> it's pretty quiet, too quiet. just construction. it's highway 4 eastbound typical construction on the roadway hanging over from leverage. just one lane blocked and maybe the off ramp eastbound. now discovery bay, we had wires down across highway 4 for the south, but those have cleared up in the last few minutes, that's good news. 680 north at 24, there's construction approaching that walnut creek interchange, as well. again, light traffic and no slowing there. but we'll watch. that should schedule to clear that fix and a smooth drive with a nice drive over any of your bay crossings for the bay area bridges

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. it is a fatal stabbing being reported as s.w.a.t. teams surround a house on cleveland avenue. we're being told that san jose police were called at the 911 center, received a call about a stabbing victim on the 200 block of cleveland avenue. they arrived and found a man unresponsive suffering from apparent stab wounds, later pronounced dead at santa clara valley medical center. >> these are live pictures that we're bringing you to the scene -- from the scene this morning, rather, as s.w.a.t. standoff. it looks like it continues out there as police are still live on the scene. officers arrived and administered cpr to the stabbing victim who was taken to valley medical center in san jose where he was pronounced dead from those injuries. now, it's interesting because people in the house there at cleveland avenue. this is at forest in the rosen garden area. the residence of the house where that call originated reportedly locked themselves in the home refusing to cooperate with investigating officers and claimed they were armed with firear
