i am laura garcia. >> i am kris sanchez. mostly dry in the south bay, kari. you are tracking light rain in other places, though? >> yes, we are seeing some of the light showers moving through. we have seen it on storm ranger. it has mainly been focused on parts of the north bay and the peninsula and now we are seeing showers move into the oakland area. as we get a closer look we can see the rain coming down, and once again a steady light rain and making the commute a little slower in some of the spots so you should slow down on your way to work. also seeing some of the rain around the san mateo area, the santa cruz mountains getting in on showers and a wider view shows we are going to see more of the wet weather rolling in and we are seeing a lot more moisture moving in, and overall the storm system is weak and it will continue to bring us scattered showers in some parts of the bay area throughout the morning and early afternoon. we won't be done with the rain, so we will talk about more about what is in the forecast in a few minutes. >>> mike, what is it loo

follow me laura garcia nbc bay area and check out kris sanchez as well. >>> welcome back.t our top stories. families in oakland are placing for a new teacher sickout that may leave some classes cancelled. students are now planning their own walkout. >> reporter: here in marin county it seems like those strict guidelines worked and now they're loosening up the guidelines a bit. the changes allow an unvaccinated person with a positive covid within 30 days not to quarantine unless the person is symptomatic and tes positive again. a fully vaccinated but unboosted person exposed to covid may still attend school if they are asymptomatic and test negative. schools will also stop sending notifications to parents. the county says its daily high was 625 new cases reported on january 4th. since then the daily average as dropped to about 300 cases. in the east bay teachers and students are making a stand to let the oakland unified school district know they don't feel enough is being done to protect them from the variant. at least a dozen schooled were forced to close last friday after

i'm laura garcia p. i'm kris sanchez in for marcus washington. the cdc updated guidelines for pfizer boosters shortening the time in between to five months. now those who received the pfizer covid vaccine can get a booster one month earlier than previously approved. the cdc is also updating guidance for immuno compromised children from the ages of 5 to 11. they can now get a third primary dose in the pfizer vaccine just 28 days after their second shot. >> and happening now, a live look at the white house which is where president biden at this hour is meeting with his white house covid response team. and this comes as the nation grapples with another surge in covid cases and covid-related hospitalizations. the average number of new u.s. covid cases per day is now back above the 1 million mark. >> school districts in the bay area statewide scrambling to try to keep the covid numbers down by using at-home testing kits. and offering new test sites. sharon is live at one of those test sites for us. busy there this morning, sharon? >> reporter: yes, la

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. first the alameda county sheriff's office is grieving this morning after one of their recruits was murdered while driving home from the academy. >> so sad. nbc bay area's rob redell joins us in dublin. what have you learned so far about him? >> well, good morning. we spoke with an alameda county sheriff sergeant this morning. they expect to release his name later today. here's what we know. he was 28 years old. he was supposed to graduate from the sheriff's academy class 172 here in february at the regional training center behind me in dublin. a sergeant tells us he was a standout among his peers, motivated, seen as a leader. and this morning his fellow recruits raised the flags to half-staff in his honor and memory. the sheriff's office did cancel classes here at the academy today and offered grief counseling for recruits. within the past hour, a number of those recruits hugged in the parking lot and headed home. none wanted to talk to us about their friend whose murder left the depa

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez in for marcus washington. boy it feels like we're back in time. omicron variant now the dominant strain of covid-19. take a look at these new numbers from the cdc. according to the cdc, the omicron variant now responsible for more than 98% of all newly reported covid infections. >> and california may be seeing its highest level of covid cases soon. that's a projection from columbia university. right now we're already seeing some of the highest levels since the start of the pandemic. the new peak may come as soon as next week. then it's forecasted to decline by the end of the month. state health leaders say the state report issing an average 100,000 new covid cases every day. >>> the spike in cases are the reasons behind the new social distancing limits that are now in effect in the north bay. >> nbc bay area's cierra johnson live in sonoma county. and these new rules are really giving us -- a lot of people a sense of deja vu. >> deja vu is exactly right. the mood really feels like something we've experienced t

. >> and i'm in for laura garcia. we'll get to the vta vaccine mandate in a few minutes. first santa clara county employees have to get their booster shots today or face pretty serious consequences. >> bob is joining us now. talk about what happens if a worker refuses to get that third shot. >> again to reiterate, the prize to santa clara workers in high risk settings, medical workers, ents and firefighters, people who work in skilled nursing facilities or who work in our local jails. if those employees do not get boosted, to answer your question, they'll be reassigned a way from those front line positions. the county did set up a waiver process. this was after hospitals protested they would lose too many workers to the mandate. each hospital or department has to apply for the exemption from the booster shot. they have to do that as a group. individual workers themselves can't so that's a change in the rules there. santa clara county fire says 40 of its firefighters have requested waivers. here's the chief of the san jose fire department. >> we do have individuals who hav

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. that deep clean is over and now those students and staff are back in school at west contra costa unified school district. >> sharon katsuda is live where high schools once again resumed. >> that's right. it looks like business as usual. the kids looked a bit groggy, like normal high school students, and they were determined, though, to get to class. the principal says they expect about 75% student attendance and only four staff members were out sick. this comes after the district shut down all campuses yesterday and last friday for a deep clean because of the rise in covid cases and the omicron surge after winter break. >> they're anxious, of course. they, like everybody, want to make sure that the kids are safe, the staff wants to be safe. but there's a real commitment to have school as usual for everybody. >> the superintendent has tips for families. stay home if you are sick, if you test positive, stay home for ten days or until you are clear of any symptoms such as fever. if you h

i'm laura garcia p. i'm kris sanchez in for marcus washington. with the start of a new week, many school districts continue to face covid-related challenges. >> one district is facing claims of struggling to provide covid tests for educators. others have decided to transition to remote learning. cierra johnson joins us live from san francisco this morning. we're now hearing from sf unified regarding those tests. >> reporter: yes, good morning. this all sounds like deja vu. we've come so far but yet so far to go, especially as the covid and covid variant continues to spread. let's start here in san francisco as you mentioned. we're now hearing back from the district regarding a situation in which those social media posts by the union. in it they claim the district ran out of test kits. the union is asking the district to prioritize an agreement around masks, testing, as well as sick leave. we reached out to district reps regarding that claim and they responded explaining in part, quote, since winter break and amid the omicron surge, we have been r

. >> i'm laura garcia. we begin with breaking news in the elizabeth holmes criminal fraud trial. here's a live look at the federal courthouse in san jose where jurors are telling the judge they have reached a verdict on eight of the 11 counts against her. they are unable to reach a verdict on the other three counts. the theranos founder is facing 11 overall counts. now it is possible the judge could direct the jury to go back and deliberate or those motions could be pulled. we've got video of holmes entering the court earlier this morning in the last 15 minutes or so. jurors sent that note to the judge. nbc bay area's scott budman is there. once he can learn more about what's going on in the courthouse, he will bring us more in a live report. all right. so let's recap how we got here. we'll start from the beginning all the way in 2003. that's when holmes, a 19-year-old stanford dropout started the company theranos. she was inspired by her own fear of needles and had a dream of creating a cheap and efficient way of getting blood tests. in 2009, balwani joins the company later beco
