i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. it's 5:30 right now.et's start out with a look at the forecast. cinthia pimentel is in for kari today. it's drier than yesterday. >> oh, yes, yesterday was sloppy, and today is calm for those hitting the road bright and early. you need a jacket because we are starting off with chilly 40s in santa clara valley. 53 in oakland, and low 50s in santa rosa. we are also looking at dense fog hanging around and a few areas of drizzle up towards the sonoma county coastline and up towards lake county. throughout the day we will dry out and go through the holiday weekend, and it will be chilly to start our christmas eve and christmas day as we get ready for the next round of rain next week. i will track that. mike spotted something on the bay bridge. what is going on? >> yeah, thank you for pointing out the flashing lights. things are now cleared over the last five minutes. everything eastbound, the headlights backed up for a bit on the decline, and i think it's the overnight crew picking up the last of the cones. we

. >> i am laura garcia. >>> we are under a high surf warning, and meteorologist, kari hall, is leading our coverage. >> it's all because of a storm that moved yesterday into the bay area, and there were high winds off the coast and gusty winds across the bay area with rain. the high surf warning continues until 3:00 a.m. we will continue with scattered showers mostly in the north bay with breezy winds at times, and another storm will be moving in for tomorrow evening. all of the activity is creating very big swells and dangerous breakers that could reach 25 to 30 feet. we are also at the time of year where we have a greater gravitational pull from the moon and that creates the water coming in further inland, so we have a coastal flooding advisory that will continue into late morning. along the coastline we are already seeing some of the waves now at about 18 to 21 feet. look at the water temperature. only 56 to 58 degrees, so it's very cold water that is coming up. every now and then some of the waves come up a lot higher than the previous waves, and that's what makes it dangerous out

. >> i'm laura garcia. we're spreading the cheer.have wrapping paper all over your living room just yet? wake up, it's time to get going. santa has had a very busy night, but clear at least. >>> he didn't have to wear a poncho. i think just maybe a light coat. he does have that big red one, so i think he was warm enough. we're in the 40s right now in napa, 41 degrees, brentwood, 41, san jose, 41. we are seeing areas of fog mainly through the north bay and the interior portion of california. santa rosa is down to about a half mile in visibility, and then i do want to showcase the now and next. in addition to some of the fog, we are monitoring our coastlines. we have a beach hazard statement in effect, along with a coastal flood advisory. all of it is expected to remain in place through about 11:00 a.m. we're talking about hide tides, sneaker waves, the potential for flooding in low-lying areas. also, it's a dense morning for especially solano county and through the interior. if you're going to be traveling anywhere near the grapevine,

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get to mike in just a bit because what's happening in your department is because of what's happening in this department. >> we're going to see more patches of fog drifting around in different areas, so we are seeing this as a result of the high humidity and it's really chilly out there as the temperature comes down to what we call the dew point, and humidity goes to 100% and basically we have a cloud on the ground. we're going to see areas shaded in gray included in that quarter mile visibility or less until about 10:00 this morning. you can see the den fog advisory in effect for the delta and down into the east bay, into fremont as well. it's coming through the tri-valley into the peninsula, as well as the coastline, and then into san jose, to the south county. so basically a lot of our low-lying areas included in that. then we are going to eventually see a change in the weather pattern that will bring in some rain heading into next week. i'll be talking more about tha

. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check that morning commute with mike in just a little bit. let's check the forecast with kari. foggy in some spots. >> really foggy in some areas, where visibility quickly drops off. but we are seeing for most of the bay area, the fog is just above the roadways and we're going to see it shifting and maybe lowering a bit over the next couple of hours. right now we're seeing visibility the worst in parts of the north bay, in napa and novato visibility is anywhere from a quarter to a half of a mile. once again, we may see some spots where it is a lot lower just temporarily, and then it does improve. so just a heads up about that. this is 580 in dublin. just a reminder the camera is up higher and at street level at times we are seeing fog moving through, but it is not a steady widespread fog. as we go into the rest of the morning, gradually it's going to clear out and we're going from a chilly start in the mid-40s to highs in the low 60s. >>> mike, you're seeing how this is impacting the commute. >> i think they may have sped up metering lights.

"today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is at the scene of that massive fire. ginger, we understand you heard about a rescue. >> reporter: that is correct, marcus and kris. the fire was pretty intense this morning. i'll have more details on that person and the way they saved themselves from this fire. but the huge flames at this point are pout, but you can see behind us the extensive damage that was left behind by this three-alarm fire. we're in san francisco's panhandle neighborhood on masonic, over between grove and hayes streets. you can see the building which burned down. crews telling me all three floors were on fire when sffd arrived on scene. it was immediately called a two-alarm fire because of its intensity. that intensity you can see here from video earlier this morning, this was taken around 3:30 in the morning, flames could be seen coming from the roof of the burnin

. >> i'm laura garcia. >> can you make it through the fog? a lot of areas are experiencing really dense fog this morning. it could affect your morning commute. it's hard to see. >> yeah, in some areas where we're not used to seeing fog that thick, it's really causing a lot of problems, and may have you wanting to step out the door a little earlier, so that you're not rushing and having to drive through really dense fog. just that heads-up as we do see this dense fog advisory extending down the coast, and also down the peninsula, and will be in the south bay to the south count, and parts of the east bay into the tri-valley, as well as much of the delta into the north bay. this has been extended until 11:00 this morning, so we are seeing visibility in a lot of areas down to zero. so less than a quarter mile visibility. yeah, it's been pretty bad for parts of the peninsula, and all the way down to san carlos. we'll watch this spread around and then we're headed for a nice day. i'll have more in a few minutes. >>> mike, you're watching those fogg

laura garcia is off. >> i'm marcus washington.ot to get to this morning, but first we want to get you started with breaking news out of san francisco. >> "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is at the scene. it's a massive fire behind you, ginger. what do you know? >> reporter: good morning, kris and marcus. it was a massive fire. it's still very much an active scene right now. you can see the home that caught on fire, that burned, is right behind us. firefighters are still all over the place, over 100 firefighters here looking at the building, the fire building, as well as the two buildings that have been evacuated next to it. there were huge flames this morning. those are now out. but you can see, even in the dark, with the help of some of the lights from the fire trucks, you can see the extensive damage left behind. we're on the 700 block of masonic near grove street in the panhandle neighborhood. we just briefly spoke to the pio from sf fire. he says that this fire broke out shortly before 3:30. it was almost immediately

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're dealing with something that effects both traffic and weather. let's start with weather, because we're talking about that fog out there. >> yeah, we have a dense fog advisory in effect. it's not as thick as it was yesterday for parts of the peninsula. this is mainly moving through the north bay as that dense fog advisory continues until 10:00 this morning. visibility down to a quarter mile or less, so that means you need to allow some extra time to get to work again today. san francisco and along the coastline included in that. visibility at half moon bay down to about a half of a mile. once again, we are seeing some of the fog moving around the north bay. but it has improved slightly compared to yesterday. looking at our temperatures for today, we're going to reach up to the low 60s for much of the east bay, from oakland in the upper 50s, to 62 in antioch. we're also getting ready for rain and i'll have the timeline of that coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, you have a couple

laura garcia is off. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get to our top story, the latest storm moving through the bay area. >> we have live team coverage. ginger conejero saab is looking at the potential impact for holiday flyers at sfo. mike is monitoring the roadways. we want to start with a look at where the storm is right now. cinthia pimentel here for kari. it looks like it's everywhere. >> yeah, it's going to be another soggy day around the bay area. good morning. i want to make sure you're prepared before you head out the door. we are looking at this storm already gaining a lot of energy. if you look, it's kind of hard to see, but wrapping around the center of the low is a little thunderstorm activity, which is also possible as we go throughout the day. i want to give you a closer look. you might have heard heavy downpours pushing through the coast, especially if you live in marin, san francisco, and some of the heavier spots in the yellow and orange. so moving toward 101, so as we get closer to the coastline, we're findi

i'm laura garcia. we're going to start with a look at that forecast. we'll check the roads with mike in just a little bit. we're going to see when they need those umbrellas. >> it will be later this morning for parts of the bay area. we'll start to see it moving from north to south. we've already fired up our microclimate weather alert as we prepare for the rain and the wind that will also churn up some big waves along the coastline and make things dangerous there. so that's the incoming storm. as we go through the timeline, we're seeing it move into the north bay by about 9:00 to 10:00 this morning, and then we'll see it continuing to move to the coastline and san francisco as we head toward late morning. much of the rest of the bay area won't see that until about the afternoon, and then going into the evening the rain will continue, with some spotty showers, and we'll see some off and on light rain through the overnight and even into the day tomorrow. but we do have another storm that's going to be coming in right behind that, as we approach the week

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to the commute with mike in just a bit, but let's talk about that forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it's starting out foggy in some spots. we have a dense fog advisory in effect for north bay valleys, as well as the delta. you can see it drifting around other parts of the bay area as well. with the dense fog, we go from having those showers over the weekend to patchy fog, and then along the coastline we'll have some dangerous surf conditions, with a beach hazard statement in effect today. then going into the middle of the week the rain will be back starting late tuesday night. as we take a look at some of our cameras around the bay area, you can see the low clouds in oakland, and we're also seeing some low clouds in dublin. but not yet meeting the roadway, but we are seeing very low visibility in parts of the north bay right now. novato, zero visibility at this point. if you're in that area, you have to drive through, make sure you allow ex

laura garcia is off. sidewalk vendors in san francisco's mission district are coming together, pushing back against a ban. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live with the message they're hoping to send to local leaders. kris? >> reporter: hi, there, ginger and marcus. some vendors say they have perpt permits. they're not supposed to be here during the 90-day ban on street venning in the mission area, but the food vendors have not been moved along, so they're trying to make a living as vendors participate in a march. about two dozen vendors are making their way to city hall where they're trying to send a strong message not only to mayor london breed but also to the supervisor that this ban is cripple them and threatens some of them to live out on the streets. we were talking with some of them as they were painting their signs and starting to gather at 24th and mission, the heart of where this ban is happening. many of these folks say they have to work where they've been because they've been here for yea

. >> i'm laura garcia. we have a look at those preparations under way in just a moment, but first let's get straight to the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking this incoming rain for us. >> it is some much-needed rain as we've had such a dry past several weeks. we are going to see those big waves building near the coastline. you can see it in that live video as this storm continues to move in. we'll get the peak of those waves for tomorrow with a high surf warning that will be in effect along the coastline with off-and-on rain. then another storm comes in on friday evening that may affect weekend plans. we can see the center of the storm here still well off the coast, and the rounds of rain that's basically pinwheeling its way into the bay area and much of northern california covered with that rain. we track it with stormranger, we are seeing scattered showers move into parts of the north bay. a closer look shows we have a pretty widespread steady rain for areas like clear lake. it is taking a bre
