laura garcia joins us with some expert advice. laura, cases of norovirus are surging across the u.s. this winter. that's according to data from the cdc. outbreaks are often seen on cruise ships, nursing homes and jails, as well as schools and places where people are close together. during the first week of december, 91 cases of norovirus were reported. that's more than double the highest number recorded between 2021 and 2024. along with vomiting and diarrhea, the most common symptoms include nausea, stomach pain, body aches, headache and fever. but one other thing to watch out for if you suspect you have norovirus is dehydration. ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin-hong says washing your hands is key to limiting the spread. if somebody has diarrhea around you, don't use hand sanitizer. it doesn't work against norovirus. use soap and water saying, you know, make sure you you use it for long enough so you have to sing happy birthday or, you know, a song by beyonce or something like that. doctor chin-hong says scrubbi

i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. so let's start out with a look at those chilly temperatures. not a look but a feel. you will feel them as you head out the door. cynthia. it's a cold start. it sure is. grab your heaviest winter coat. we are under a frost advisory for most of the bay, except the slivers there of the peninsula coast and into san francisco. but you notice there's also a purple on your screen. that's a freeze warning for parts of marin, napa and sonoma counties. this will be with us until about 10:00 this morning. once we start to warm up those temperatures a little bit and you see those subfreezing temperatures there through sonoma, out there towards fairfield, 27 degrees right now, and those chilly 30s continue into the south bay 34 in south san jose today. but as we go on into the afternoon, the good news is we're going to soak up a lot of sunshine and feel those temperatures actually nearing the 70 degree mark in our inland valleys. so we'll talk about the warm up today and into tomorrow. but the big

i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. let's get right to the situation unfolding in southern california. at least five people are now confirmed dead from the wildfires spreading on a massive scale from severe santa ana winds. the largest, by far, is the palisades fire. it is now grown to more than 17,000 acres. firefighters so far are only saying the number of homes destroyed is likely more than 1000. we have a live look at the eaton fire burning in altadena. this so far is the only fire where deaths are confirmed. confirmed. and today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with the latest developments. it's just heartbreaking to report all this. kris, there is still a very tough battle for first responders, and we know that they're coming from throughout the state of california. reporter yes, and it is so eerie, laura, because it's so still here in san jose this morning. and yet firefighters are leaving these conditions and heading right into the front lines of that firefight. firefighters from san jose were

on this tuesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia.re going to check that morning commute with mike, see how things are rolling out there. we know it's cold again. kari. yes. and some of the same temperatures. so once again we are going to have a frost advisory and a freeze warning for some spots in the south bay. but then looking at what to expect over the next several hours, even though we're already seeing some of those temperatures near or below freezing, we may dip another few degrees before sunrise. this morning. we are freezing in livermore at 32 and below freezing in danville, while oakland is at 45. it's 33 in sonoma and 32 in santa rosa. and then once again, we're going to see more of the same temperatures that we've been seeing the past few days, highs in the upper 50s and low 60s, up to 57 in fremont, while san jose will see a high of 62, as well as 62, in santa rosa. no changes temperature wise, but eventually rain comes back, so we'll talk about that in theull microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. sounds good.

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we begin with that breaking news down in southern california. that's where out of controlled wildfires simply leaving firefighters overmatched at this hour. three separate fires are causing major destruction. by far the largest started yesterday morning in pacifica, pacific palisades, and has now exploded in size. another fire, a major one, is now burning in altadena. this is north of pasadena, and a third one is now growing in the city of sylmar. the conditions are intense. firefighters and homeowners agree the whipping santa ana winds are creating the seeding seeds for disaster. what you're feeling are these sporadic winds. it's not this consistent flow from the usual santa ana's that puts it in a in a consistent direction. embers jump ahead as the wind blows, so they jump ahead of the fire and they catch things on fire. it's just there's fire all the way around us. it is a tough firefight. needless to say, there is no containment on any of these fires. in some bay area fire teams a

i'm laura garcia. i'm marcus remain under evacuation ordersoe this morning, with fears of strong winds that could make a return any time now. in southern california, another 85,000 under evacuation warnings and the number of confirmed deaths in the palisades and eden fires now at 25. right now in southern california, crews on the ground say extremely strong winds never materialized overnight. but conditions are worsening at this hour. lauren coronado from our l.a. sister station has more from the palisades fire zone. this is where firefighters this morning are really expressing some relief as they try to get a handle on those flames. it's been just over a week since the palisades fire sparked, and today we're still dealing with red flag conditions. thankfully, there aren't many active flames out right now. in fact, there haven't been bad flames the last couple days. but firefighters say there are still a lot of areas that are smoldering, a lot of vegetation, and that's really what they're working on. c

on this thursday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to the forecast. and cynthia in just a moment. she's in for kerry this morning. but we want to check in with mike inouye. he's been tracking a deadly crash in the east bay. yes. this morning, folks. about 330 this morning, there was a deadly crash here in pittsburgh. it's eastbound highway four. the freeway itself has two lanes that are blocked for this investigation. this also impacted the railing between the freeway and the bart tracks. and so bart, doing its early service, determined they can't drive those trains through the area right now because of debris and potentially that car sticking out into the tracks. so while they investigate this deadly crash at bailey on eastbound highway four, which is open, the bart system has stopped trains between antioch and north concord martinez stations. you'll have to use alternate service, some other transportation through the contra costa county to get over here to the north. concord martinez station. at that point, bart service would be able to resume on th

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. windy conditions are picking back up on the front lines of the southern california wildfires. now, crews on the ground, they have a new battle on their hands right now. the auto fire. this is burning just north of los angeles and ventura. that fire is burning along a riverbed not far from a golf course. evacuations are in place along that riverbed, but we are told that no homes or other structures are threatened at this time. cal fire says that it has burned 56 acres and there is no containment. the two largest fires remain the eaton and palisades fires. palisades fire has scorched nearly 24,000 acres. it is 14% contained. in the meantime, the eaton fire in altadena has consumed more than 14,000 acres. it is about a third contained. 24 people are still confirmed to have died due to the pisades and eaton fires. 23 remain missing. more than 12,000 structures have been destroyed since the first fire started a week ago. also at this hour, investigators are now working to zero in on the ca

all right i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that morning commute with mike because a lot of folks head back to work this week. all right. and what about those conditions outside kari? it's very windy in some spots, and we are starting out with some slightly warmer temperatures. here's a live look outside in walnut creek. in fact, yesterday this was a much different picture where we had low visibility in the fog. but now that the wind has picked up, it's mixing out a lot of the fog and also keeping our temperatures up. we're in the low 50s right now in danville. it is 58 in san francisco and 59 in santa rosa. as we take a look at what to expect today in livermore, lots of sunshine and temperatures going from upper 40s to low 60s. today we are going to be a little bit warmer than it was yesterday, with a high of 64 expected inan jose, as well as 66 in oakland and up to 64 in fairfield this afternoon. mike, you're seeing the commute is back. it's back and the wind is not mixing this out. this is just continuin

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington.this hour, all eyes on the forecast as firefighters are battling three fast moving wildfires in southern california and bracing for a new week of high winds. now, evacuation ords are in effect for 105,000 residents, and 87,000 are in evacuation warning zones. now, this means that they may need to leave at a moment's notice. palisades and eden fires are still by far the largest. more than 12,000 structures are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed. many more are still threatened. 24 people have died in those fires. 16 have been reported missing. here's a look at where things stand. we just got an update within the last half hour. progress is slowly being made. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres. it is 14% contained. an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the fire. it is now 95% contained. it is charred nearly 800 acres. southern california's power company revealed friday. a downed conductor was discov

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. this morning we are getting some staggering numbers. authorities in southern california now confirming ten deaths in the la county wildfires, with a number sure to increase. some 10,000 structures are believed to be no more. governor gavin newsom is already taking swift action. he's already deployed national guard members, including 400 troops, to assist with traffic control and protecting critical infrastructure. soldiers also helping support law enforcement to prevent looting. so far, 20 people have been arrested and the governor is posting this on x. it's a warning for anyone taking advantage of evacuated communities. looting will not be tolerated. we have a live look at the fires this morning. curfews are now in effect for the palisades and eaton fire evacuation zones. the curfews run between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. a lot of it is meant to combat all the looting going on. macy jenkins from our la station has more for us in altadena. this is where there is not much standing. all througho

i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we are following that breaking news in southern california and the major new wildfire that started yesterday morning north of los angeles. firefighters overnight say they were starting to gain the upper hand, but there is still a lot of work to be done. it's called the hughes fire. it's burning in castaic, near magic mountain, just off of i-5. containment is now at 14%, but right now 31,000 people are under evacuation orders. and as of last night, more than 10,000 acres burned. another small fire broke out oveight in la that crews quickly tackled. it burned about 20 acres. this is near the 405. crews stopped forward progress in about three hours. let's turn now to forecaster cinthia pimentel. she's been tracking the conditions that they're up against there this morning. red flag warning still continuing today. and it's been extended into the early hours of tomorrow for the santa clarita valley, parts of la and ventura counties and down into the inland empire, orange county, as well as

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll have more local headlines for you in just a moment. but first we want to begin in southern california this morning. thousands of homes are still threatened by those flames of three large wildfires. the biggest palisades village and eaton fires so far. at least 24 lives we know have been lost. and that number is expected to rise. and at least 16 people have been reported missing. so far, more than 12,000 structures are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed. crews are working to gain ground as they brace for more dangerous conditions in the coming days. this is a look at where things stand. the palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres, and it is still just 13% contained. now, containment jumped to 27% on the eden fire. it has burned more than 14,000 acres in altadena. also, an investigation is underway into whether southern california edison equipment played a role in starting the first fire. it's now 95% contained and has charred nearly 800 acres. the fire sparked last

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we do begin with that breaking news down in southern california. that's where an out of control wildfires simply leaving firefighters outmatched. want to give you a live look this morning from mount wilson? this is in altadena. and the eaton fire. you can see a reporter there standing in front of here. so this is the eden fire. that's where it's one of three fires causing some major destruction down there. another one started just yesterday morning in pacific palisades, and it is now by far the largest there, exploding in size. you can see just kind of how the conditions are for those who are working there around those conditions. now, the third fire started late last night in the city of sylmar. photojournalist alex vasquez from our la sister station is on the front lines of that eden fire. now, in his report sent to us just a short time ago. it's going to give you just an idea of what firefighters are up against. you're seeing here is l.a. get a stance. save the home next door. this

i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we do begin with this breaking news. a monterey county battery storage plant is forcing 1500 people out of their homes. this is a battery storage facility at the vistra power plant in moss landing. the fire is contained, but one county supervisor is already calling it a disaster. today in the bay's kris sanchez is live for us nearby in castroville this morning, with more of the overnight developments for us. and, kris, i know you've been out there for some time. can you smell anything, any of that smoke in the air out there? i cannot, and actually i'm quite surprised by that because this is such a toxic fire. we did bring our n95 masks. we have them down. but i did check the air quality index. and the air quality is poor because there is very small particulate matter in the air. so we will be masking up when we are not on camera this morning because you can't smell that small particulate matter, but it can definitely get into your lungs. and that is bad for sensitive people. as you can see here behind me, there are still

laura garcia is off a 3.7 magnitude quake shook san francisco and parts of the peninsula this morning, and we just experienced another 3.0 aftershock just minutes before this newscast. so far, no damages or injuries reported. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco. and ginger, no doubt some of us here in the bay area know earthquakes well. that 3.7 and that 3.0 may not seem like a big deal. but we also know that you never know what's on the other side of any of these smaller quakes. that's right marcus. and that is what an expert that we spoke with this morning said, you never know if something is a foreshock to something larger or down the road. nonetheless, it's also not uncommon for there to be a series of smaller earthquakes. now, this morning was a bit of a jolt, if you will, for many in san francisco. for those at least w felt it. usgs recording a 3.7 magnitude quake just past seven this morning. it hit off the coast a few miles near the san francisco zoo on the san andreas fault. now we know that fault to be more active, so smaller quakes throughout

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington.biggest fires in southern california rage on with no containment, there are some signs of potential progress for firefighters with a small break in the weather. nbc bay area's kris sanchez is live for us from the newsroom with the latest there. chris. well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. so the santa ana winds are still howling, especially in the area of the palisades fire. but firefighting planes and choppers are able to go back up. and i want to show you what a difference that makes in the firefight. this is the sunset fire that started just before 6:00 last night. swiftly, their firefighters were able to stop the fire's progress toward homes and contain the perimeter, limiting spot fires set by those spreading embers. this fire was rapidly and aggressively attacked by using coordinated air and ground fire suppression efforts. residents heeded our timely evacuation orders, so that's what happens when everything goes well. and that's the hope for that kind of break in the pali

i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington right now. more than 160,000 people under either evacuation orders or warnings. now that could increase as flames fanning winds are expected to strengthen within into wednesday. let's start right with those latest numbers that we have for you this midday. there are now three major fires burning in southern california. right now you can see where they're located on this map. so far, at least 24 people have been killed in these fires. 24 remain missing. the largest fire, the pacific palisades fire that has burned more than 23,000 acres. it is 17% contained now. it started exactly a week ago, and officials estimate that more than 5000 structures, including many homes, have been damaged or destroyed. the next largest is the eaton fire in altadena, north of pasadena. it's burned more than 14,000 acres. fire crews now have it 35% contained. officials say 7000 structures have been damaged in the fire. the most recent fire is located in ventura county. the fire is 56 acres and 0% contained. the national
