"today in the bay's" christie smith is live. >> reporter: the people who live in the high-rise woke up and saw flames shooting out of a six-floor unit. there were two people injured in this fire. let's look at some of the video from overnight here on kambon drive. the fire burned in a that one ?[á. before they even arrived here they were getting reports of oxygen tanks exploding in the building. they called in extra units to help here at the park merced and of course there was the immediate concern of the safety of all the residents in such a large building. this is a 12-story building so many people were evacuated or sheltered in place while firefighters focused on the one unit. two people were injured here, at least one of them needed some oxygen. >> it's a high-rise building, requires evacuation, that's one of the big efforts we have to do, evacuate the personnel because of the smoke. precautionary measur

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. that s.w.a.t. situation happening on bernice avenue near story road on the east side. they are just wrapping it up. bob redell is live at the scene. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you. the people in the 8 to 10 homes who were evacuated here should be able to return home soon. the standoff having ended in the past 30 minutes. it was a wanted felon taken into custody. he surrendered peacefully around 5:30 this morning. this started around 6:30 last night, police here in san jose received an anonymous 911 call telling them that this man wanted on an outstanding felony arrest warrant was in the home. when police arrived he refused to come out. they had to call in merge which is san jose's version of s.w.a.t. team. they surrounded the home, they spoke with the man throughout the night. other people in the home came out unharmed so it became a situation where this man was in the home by himself. at one point during communication with police he was telling police he was, quote, stuck. pol

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. it was a brutal attack that left giants fan bryan stow with life long brain damage and now nearly three years after that beating, the suspects may change their pleas to guilty. bob redell is live in stow's hometown with exclusive details. >> reporter: yes, here in his hometown where bryan stow is recovering, scott, again from brain damage, unable to take care of himself, there are two men who authorities say are responsible for putting him in that situation. they are expected to accept plea deal this is morning. in under three hours in a los angeles courtroom for allegedly attacking stow outside a dodgers stadium in march 2011 after the opening day game between the giants and the dodgers. according to nbc news, one of the suspects, a dodgers fan louie sanchez, would plead guilty to either all, some or a reduced version of the charges. you see they are listed on the screen. in exchange he would surf eight years in state prison. his co-defendant are marvin norwood, would agree to serve

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. crime scene tape is up, investigators still combing the scene for evidence in a neighborhood near paseo grande in san lorenzo. bob joins us live. walk us through what happened. >> reporter: good morning to you. you can see behind me the crime scene van with the sheriff office is out here at the 98 or 100 block of san lorenzo. this started around 10:00 last night. started as a medical call. there is a man and woman who live here. a 60-year-old man. he was called for the ambulance, was in the ambulance outside his home. for whatever reason became combative with county fire, the emts. he assaulted at least one of those people, then ran out of the ambulance, ran inside the home. the wife still outside. the emt, they called for what is called a code 3 cover, they call law enforcement saying we need you out here. we have a serious situation. when the sheriff's office came out they knew the man was inside so a sergeant and four deputies went inside to search for him and this is what happened

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. a quickly developing story in ukraine where a warrant is now out for the arrest of the country's president accusing him of mass crimes against protesters. ukrainian law enforcement says the president is on the run after signing a peace deal with opposition leaders. this grainy video, one tv station says shows the president boarding a helicopter hours after he was ousted from office. he was reportedly last seen in a pro russian city on the black sea peninsula. >> this morning protest camps are set up in central kiev. you can see clusters of the tents in the streets now set up, the site of last week's violent clashes with police. earlier this morning flowers and candles were placed throughout independence square for the scores of protesters killed and injures. people have been protesting for months since the government took a bailout from russia instead of dealing with the european union. >> here at home the dalai lama wraps up his visit with a trip to the south bay. hundreds coming but

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. san jose firefighter is reportedly facing drug and sex crimes this morning after getting arrested at the fire station where he worked. christie smith live in san jose with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. disturbing accusations against mario enrique who work forward the fire department for years. according to the merck he is facing serious drug and sex charges involving children. he is also accused of selling methamphetamine and sex assault again involving minors. the merc sites the department of justice. they believe the 53-year-old they say was booked after an arrest as you said at the station where he worked. this happened just yesterday. it is believed that he was soliciting business on line. computers were seized from his home and the fire station. his face book page says he has worked for the department since 1994, 53 years old, they say at this point it's unclear the number of victims and the information they say came from a tip but not a tip

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. we start with an update to breaking news. investigators looking into the cause of a deadly fire. >> bob redell is near the home. bob, what are firefighters telling you? >> good morning. the fire department ficks out the cause when they figure out whether or not the fatal fire was intentional or accidental. the police department is treating this property here as a crime scene. this photo taken by san jose fire overnight. shows what the firefighters encountered when they arrived. looking at a small cottage located behind the main house. you can see it was fully involved, the fire captain tells us that there was no way to save the person. too late. the fire department confirms the i.d. the body is too badly burned. it's been removed. they believe it was their tenant. a 45-year-old man. loved to feed the pigeons and cats in the became yard. >> it's a hard feeling that comes to you because you've known the guy for almost five years. and i mean, i would talk to him, joke with him. that's hard knowing that he died. >> they did succe

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news out of russia, a student has been arrested after shooting and killing a teacher and a police officer at a moscow school. investigators say the student entered the school carrying a rifle, he held 20 students and his teacher hostage in the classroom. he killed the teacher and an officer responding to the scene. another officer was wounded in that shooting. no students, though, have been hurt. so far nobody understands why it happened but it does come as russia steps into the global spotlight just three days before it hosts the winter games. we'll have a live report on security and other issues linked to the games coming up in about 20 minutes. >> a napa mother and her boyfriend are behind bars in connection with the killing and sexual assault of the mother's 3-year-old daughter. now friends and family are speaking out about the little girl's shocking death. chase cain live in el cerrito where the couple was arrested at a b.a.r.t. station after being on the run for a day.

i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. fire broke out just after midnight on willard avenue in san jose. bob redell is out there live at the scene. what have you found out so far? >> reporter: good morning to you. in the past half hour the coroner has removed the body of that person killed in this fire overnight. the body is so badly burned they haven't been able to determine whether it was a man or woman or who that person is or was. they don't know if it's the middle-aged man who was living in the cottage or someone else. this is what the fire looked like just after midnight. it's a photo courtesy of the san jose fire department. they took this just to show us how involved the fire was when they arrived around 12:15 this morning. you could see flames coming out on all four sides of this cottage located in the back of this home as well as the roof. very small building around 300 to 400 square feet. they still do not know the cause. but they had to go to a second alarm because the fire was so big, the concern was it might
