laura james was one to have the first to notice. she alerted scientists when starfish began washing uh on shores near her home. >> i thought this is getting a little too close for comfort. i need to see what's going on and document it. >> reporter: as a diver and underwater videographer, james was equipped to do something. she decided to take her camera to a spot popular among both divers and starfish. these pilings are usually covered with a rainbow of starfish. on a recent dive, james discovered a scene from a horror film. >> there were bodies everywhere, to me looked like someone had taken a laser gun and zapped them and they just vaporized. >> reporter: starfish, also knowno as sea stars, are wasting away by the tens of thousands, not just in puget sound, but up and down north america's pacific coast and nobody knows why. >> i have been out here almost 24 years and people always ask me, do you see any big difference between now and when you started? i've seen subtle differences, but this is the change of my lifetime. we've had s

laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news, fremont police investigating a string of small fires, two of them at local elementary schools. firefighters were first called to james leech elementary school where they discovered a portable building on fire. as they arrived a second call came in about a fire at warm springs elementary school. minutes later a third fire at warm springs park. all of these fires less than a mile apart leaving investigators to call them at least suspicious. christie smith is talking to investigators right this minute. she'll have a live report coming up. >> the threat after tsunami off the coast of northern california has passed following a 6.9 quake overnight. since it hit off the coast last night at about 10:30, 19 after shocks have shane the area. the biggest was a 4.6. late last night we spoke with sergeant howden from the eureka police department. she felt the ground roll for about a minute. >> we didn't get reports of damage, no reports of injury yet. i think a few people called, had furniture fell over. so far that's been it. >> some stores also reported items falling off shelves but nothing serious. >> let's check in with chris

laura garcia-cannon. an update to breaking news we're following, the hunt is on for an arsonist in fremont. early this morning three fires broke out at two schools and a park. crews responded to james leech elementary, warm springs elementary and warm springs park all within a few hundred feet of each other. christie smith is live in fremont this morning. christie, you have new information how this could impact students. >> reporter: yes. we're hearing at least one of the portables at james leech elementary will be impacted and that's because there was a fire on the outside, a firefighter told me he thought it was used by the ymca as a daycare or after school. but he wouldn't be usable today. as you said these are three fires about a half mile apart, all on the same street, i wanted to show you some of the worst damage. this is at warm springs elementary school. it is the snack shack near the baseball field on fernol. investigators believe the ones i spoke w saying that this series of fires started after 2:00 this morning. another one may be 100 yards away from where we are, the warm springs park bathroom, that one was also heavily damaged overnight as well. and then another one as
