dr laura james is a senior middle east analyst at the geopolitical analysis firm 0xford analytica.s's strategy. the tactic i think has been to get these hostages as bargaining chips. there are certain things hamas has achieved which can't be undone. firstly, they have shown themselves as the prime mover here. they have launched a devastating attack that israel didn't expect, that nobody thought was possible. hamas has been taking all the credit for this, in terms of competition for leadership of the palestinian people, leadership of the resistance against israel, hamas has made a very strong move. and now they have the hostages, so whether they want to go for using them in the immediate conflict or using them as a negotiating tool going forward, they have those tools, and i simply don't see how israel could rescue 100 hostages in this gaza situation. and israel takes hostages very seriously. 0nce captured soldier was once exchanged for 1000 palestinian prisoners. —— one captured soldier. so the numbers are enormous. most arab countries that have good ties with the us and would like
