of course, lake charles, louisiana, hasn't recovered from hurricane laura which struck back in august. martin savidge is there and here's his report on delta's impact so far and the challenges the city faces. >> reporter: hurricane delta came to shore east of the city. that was good news for the city because it meant the city was spared the worst of the storm. this is a city that couldn't face any type of storm. it was so badly six weeks ago by hurricane laura. the mayor here said he believed 95% of the buildings and homes in this community have been damaged in some way by laura. they were in a much weaker position to try to fasz hurricane delta. we do noah cording to the mayor there were 911 calls that came in. the problem is emergency crews couldn't go out and respond because it would have been too dangerous. we'll have to wait until the winds subside where they will again go through search and rescue operations, something they are sadly practiced at. the real concern has been the issue of debris. so much debris and there was so little time in between storms they couldn't clear it all up. m

laura. >> the national hurricane center says delta could cause dangerous storm surge. cnn's martinge following the latest from lake charles, louisiana. always an abundance of caution here. how bad do they expect it to be? can they really know, at this point? >> well, you know, right now, it's a cat 3, maybe a cat 2. last time i was here, six weeks ago for laura, the real concern was the water. this time, the wind. it's easy to see why, just with everything around me. let me show you this, this debris, tons of it. this is just aluminum siding, but razor sharp, gets picked up and goes through air and has nails to boot. that would slice a person open. look down the street, you can see there is tons and tons and tons of debris in this town. the city has hauled away about 1.5 million cubic tons, but haven't even scratched the surface here. that all becomes airborne if the winds become tropical or hurricane force and becomes a battering ram. it's one of the reasons they pushed so hard for the mandatory evacuation. i want to show you the drone footage we've got. it's another symptom of wh

laura, anyway continues winow c. this community is suffering. john. >> i got to say, martins just ferocious there right now. if you can still hear me, you mentioned that another storm passed just a few weeks ago and there were still tarps out on many of the buildings. what did they do to get ready for this? >> well, the first thing they did was tell people to leave and they were absolutely adamant and serious about you have to go. and many did. but there were others suffering from evacuation fatigue. they didn't want to leave. i talked to families who stayed behind. i have no idea how they are handling things, now. but the debris piles were 5 and 6-feet high, all along the street in which they lived. imagining all of that material and this kind of wind does make it very frightening. so, i think, for a lot of people here, they got out. for those who stayed behind, they've got to be rethinking that decision right now. but there's nothing, of course, they can do till morning and when things subside. >> martin savidge. you and your team, please, stay safe. thank you so much for
