laura podesta joins us from the new york stock exchange with today's moneywatch report.g. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. yes. today is going to be a very different situation than what we saw on friday, with a surge of more than 9%. the dow was up 1,985 points. the nasdaq up 673. the s&p 500 soared 230 points on friday. we should say that earlier in that week, we saw some of the worst losses since 1987. it's going to be more of the same today. stock futures plunged yesterday. we are seeing the engine markets drop overnight. and u.s. futures right now are down. we are seeing about a projected, 1, 200 point drop of the dow in the open. this is despite the fact the federal reserve cut interest rates to near zero yesterday in order to try to boost the economy. it gives investors a little bit of confidence. they said they would be buying up billions of dollars in government and mortgage-backed debt. and that the fed would use, quote, its full range of tools to support the flow of credit to households and businesses. so it was supposed to instill a lot of confidence. righ
