laura sanchez was at the white house with the latest on what the trump administration is saying. we are going start at the border with polo sandoval where members of congress are heading this morning. polo, good morning to you. what are you seeing and expecting to see? >> yesterday, a visit from republican lawmakers. today, democratic lawmakers are traveling to the rio grande, considered to be one of the busiest for border patrol ab apprehensions. prosecutors here have seen a 266% increase in the prosecution of illegal entry cases. we have seen them in the past, but not to these levels here. where do the numbers stands when it comes to the children currently being held by federal authorities? at this point, the numbers showing 2,458 children under 13 years old throughout the country in the care of the department of health and human services. 482 of those are children ages 5 and under. important to add context to the number. the 2400 number includes children separated from their parents and also the unaccompanied minors. that has been the constant issue of border patrol agents in

kris sanchez joins us live with what we're expecting today. good morning, kris. >> reporter: hi there, laura, just got new information from supervisor cindy chavez' spokes person who says this census question pushed back and the push to get more people to registered to vote is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of women gaining the right to vote and show of how much more we need to do. now, the concern is that a proposed immigration on the 2020 census could lead to fewer people being counted. one supervisor wants to make sure anyone who can vote does. here's some of the back story on that. the justice department wants to include the citizenship question to enforce minority protections under the voting rights act. 1950 census was the last one with the citizenship question and already california attorney general javier ba rer as saying it could be undercounted which could shift funding. the census bureau is already investigating how to fill in that answer using other government records and data. cindy chavez endeputy county executive will unveil the full plan at 9:00 this morning right

laura garcia. details are slowly coming into our newsroom. it was breaking news that we first heard in our newsrooms so we sent nbc bay area's kris sanchez to the scene and gathering information. we know there was a lot of police activity in an apartment complex. not a lot of crime in that area. we're going to show you why it's connected to the woman you see on the screen and the stanford campus. let's check in with kris sanchez now. >> reporter: well, this is a bit of a surprise. we came out here on reports of an officer shot a suspect and found out here is that this may be the solving, the solution of a 40-year cold case homicide. the suspect was inside this apartment building where he lives and this is where sheriff's deputies were trying to serve a search warrant in a 40-year-old cold case when that man allegedly shot and killed himself. now, this is san jose police jurisdiction but the sheriff's department was serving that search warrant. we talked with sheriff laurie smith this morning and unusual for her to show up at scenes like this one but she said it resonated with her. this young woman murdered brutally and also sexually assaulted i

sanchez joins us from richmond with what the protests are calling for. folks say it could come out for that today. a lot of people there? >> reporter: hi there, laura. it is a much different scene from the one in los angeles here in richmond at the contra costa county west count detention facility. right now the folks are taking to the open mike having their say but all morning long they've been singing and chanting and marching with signs outside, what is the only i.c.e. center in the bay area. on any given day, there are 200 immigrants detained here and in recent months the contra costa sheriff started publishing the release states of the immigrant detainees. thereby allowing i.c.e. to track and detain them without the sheriff directly violating the california sanctuary policy of not using sources to aid enforcement. protesters say it is time for i.c.e. to go altogether and to hold local law enforcement accountable as well. >> to those who say maybe abolishing i.c.e. is too harsh. give me an alternative of how to train i.c.e. officials or the department to change and i think that perhaps it is just best to start over. >> there is no doubt that she
