thomas live in pyeongchang. there were some unexpected results as well for team u.s.a., garvin. >> reporter: that's right, laura. one of the amazing things about the olympics is not just the level of competition, but just how much there is of it. there was a moment last night, the very same moment nathan chen was skating on the ice mikaela shiffrin was skiing down the slalom course. both had a disappointing importance, but that doesn't matter, the olympics just keep chugging along. next up we have an appearance of one of the superstars of skiing in prime time tonight, that of course lindsey vonn. vonn has won more world cup races than any woman in history, but hasn't competed in an olympics in eight years after injuries kept her out of sochi. now, she skis the super-g in prime time tonight and then later in the week she goes for downhill gold. now, competing in her first ever olympics is kendall wessenberg of modesto. they say she is most likely the first winter olympian ever from that central valley city. she played soccer growing up, saw skeleton for the first time in the 2010 olympics, thought it looked cool

thomas joins us again live from pyeongchang. high winds are no joke over there. >> reporter: they are no joke, laura, particularly when they lead to evacuations and that's exactly what happened in the building behind us. you remember monday i took you on a tour of the super store. as you can see that's basically a big tent and the winds were so high they had to evacuate the building because they were afraid it would call down. you will understand why when you take a look at this crazy video from overnight. people literally running from falling debris and banners, tents and fencing be being ripped to shreds. the super store wasn't the only tent structure evacuated. the nbc commissary that is here at the olympic park which is where we can go to eat when working that is and a tent as well, that had to be emptied out for the evening as well. it isn't the type of experience that one couple from san francisco was expecting on their trip to the olympics. >> we just got an emergency alert, we were stressed out because we can't leave what's going on, but it looks like that structure might fall over. we don't know. >> we were in the cafe

thomas streamed aerial gold's escapades on facebook live overnight. she wants these olympic pins we can't stop hearing about. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcust you think? bronze medal in snow board halfpipe, but she wanted it to get even better and thought there were two things that would make her olympic experience better, one, spending more time with fans, she says during the competition hearing them cheer, that's wonderful, but she wanted to get to know them a little better, and two, she wanted more pins. she came up with this idea, she drew up that said, hi, i'm arielle gold, a bronze medal, one one pin i will ask any question you want, for two pins you can take a picture with me, for three pins you can hold my bronze medal. she went out into the olympic park and it was a big hit. she had crowds around her the whole time. people were very happy to give up some of their pins in exchange for what she had to offer. she got two of mine so i got a picture with her today and it was just a wonderful experience for the fans, but she said it was a great experience for her. she had a wonderful time getting to know the people, meeting them in a wa
