lauren demarco has more on this story. >> reporter: as flames raced through the kiss nightclub in brazilpatrons scrambled to make their way outside. [sirens] >> reporter: with more than 230 people killed, it appears to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade. witnesses say the band on stage performing was using flares which sparked the flames. video from the scene shows shirtless young men joining firefighters, using axes to break through windows and walls to help free those trapped. according to doctors, most of those killed were suffocated by the smoke. at least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom, apparently the victims confused the rest room door with the exit door. we spoke with prince george's county fire chief who said this tragedy should serve as a reminder to be aware of your surroundings, particularly in a crowd. >> everyone will try to go out the same door they came in, because it's all they know. if they look for the secondary exits they'll have an idea in their head, i know i can go this way. if you didn't look in the beginning, you'll never know. >>

before we go back to tony and allison, let's go out to lauren demarco in virginia, with the latest onreparations for the snow. are you there? >> reporter: i am here, tucker. it is so cold and the pavement temperature is below 20 degrees, which means that a lot of the crews cannot actually pretreat the roads with salt because of concerns that that will freeze. become more of an issue. right now there is still treatment in areas because it's left over from yesterday's snow. but they had not been treating the roads overnight. you want to be careful. watch out for slick spots as you head out this morning. yesterday on i-95 here in virginia, we are in springfield, but in the triangle area we had an accident involving a virginia state trooper. another accident involving a vdot vehicle. fortunately, only nonlife- threatening injuries in those crashes. but they were just several of many crashes that we saw yesterday during the snowfall. we know what happens when there is snow during a rush hour commute. it leads to a headache. a lot of folks planning ahead for that today. be careful as you he

our lauren demarco is down there this morning.l be live at freedom plaza. >> we will run down the president's morning. we want to get you caught up on the inauguration day weather and the commute if you are heading downtown. let's start with the weather. turn is back in the studio with that. and tucker, it is a day to wear layers upon layers. it is cold. >> if you think air done, put another layer on. then you're done. it is not as bad as it was four years ago when temperatures only got in the upper 20s. ments a typical january day. it is chilly out there no doubt about it. later this afternoon, we should briefly top out in the low to mid-40s and then the real cold stuff arrives later this afternoon and tonight. look out tonight. our temperature will fall back into the teens and low 20s. 33 at reagan national. 17 at binghamton. check out chicago at 13. detroit at 18. that is where our arctic boundary is, just north of those cities. it will be headed to the south and east very quick toward the washington area later this afternoon.

lauren demarco has the latest on the case. >> reporter: five people shot inside the d.c. sound stage, a nightclub in northeast. >> makes me not want to bring my son outside. that's crazy. that's almost a massacre. >> reporter: neighbors are on alert as the suspect remains on the loose. >> it's going to make me, you know, look over my shoulder a little bit more. >> reporter: police responded to the venue around 2:30 a.m. they say four men were shot and a woman took a bullet to the chest. >> everyone knows everyone around here. so we're all at a shock and awe that this type of situation has even happened. >> reporter: the promoter for the club says the club does not have a history for violence. >> this was a random act of somebody who walked off the street, into the club, opened the door, and started firing. >> reporter: investigators are checking to see if nearby surveillance cameras captured video. they're also working to determine a motive. the venue was hosting a private birthday party at the time. he doesn't believe the gunman knew anybody inside. >> he ran off and lef

she sat down with fox 5's lauren demarco for this exclusive interview. >> before we saw this scene the gunman emerging from the bank hostage in hand he had spent about an hour inside the building terrorizing the staff who just arrived for their shift. diana vera's desk was inside an office in the bank. she describes the day that she will never forget and how it has impacted her life. [ sirens ] >> i'm hearing gunfire. let's lock those doors. we need to lock those doors. >> all right. we are following breaking news right now. >> the live coverage was terrifying. a gunman holding a bank teller hostage outside of the capital one in takoma park, maryland. in a matter of minutes two years of that frightening morning bank employee diana vera is still recovering from the traumatic experience. >> it totally changed my life. >> she was in her office just to the right of the front door when the suspect walked in. she immediately sensed something was wrong. >> it had snowed that week. normally our customers would take off their hats and gloves and this person didn't. that's what caught my eye. >>

as tucker said, it's here for for the weekend. >> lauren demarco is live in virginia this morning withparing for possible slick conditions. lauren, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. we are in springfield. and i got to tell you, it's so cold here. in fact, it is too cold for some of the area highway crews to pretreat the roads. maryland state highway saying that they are in fact not pretreating with salt because of concerns that it could freeze, which will lead to bigger problems. they are monitoring roadways, and if they found icy patches they'll treat those individually. once the snow starts this afternoon they'll be ready to respond. d.c. says they have 200 plows on the ready. same deal here in virginia, where crews are monitoring the roads. in fact, yesterday we had several accidents along 95 in virginia yesterday morning as snow was coming down around 8:30 a.m. there was an accident that involved a state trooper. actually he was responding to a previous accident, and his cruiser was hit by another car at that accident scene. he was okay. also an accident involving a

fox 5's lauren demarco was in court with the latest on the case now. >> the jury adjourns before reaching a decision. the jurors deliberated since just after 2:00 this afternoon following closing arguments. the decision before them, whether former town of culpeper police officer daniel harmon- wright shot a 54-year-old woman with intent to kill or whether he used his weapon as an act of self-defense and to protect the public. on februar9th, 2012, patricia cook was sitting in her car in a lot at epiphany catholic school. she refused to leave even when confronted by a school administrator. so then officer daniel harmon- wright was called into check on a suspicious vehicle. when he arrived, cook said she was waiting for a friend. she displayed her driver's license but apparently declined to hand it over to him. harmon-wright testified he reached for it but she rolled up her window, trapped his hand and began to drive. he says he fired because he felt his life was in danger. the former policeman kept firing after the car moved away from him. special prosecutor jim fisher told the jury harmon-

fox 5's lauren demarco has the story. >> reporter: officer chris young is being rpd as an outstanding member of the community and police force in prince william county. a number of people took the mike, including acting police chief lieutenant colonel barry barnard. those who knew him best say he died doing what he loved, that he was passionate about being a motorcycle officer. he was on his motorcycle yesterday afternoon responding to a call when he was struck and killed. police say his emergency equipment was activated, lights and siren were on. but a minivan attempting to make a left-hand turn into the shopping center here at piper lane and noxville road collided with him. two off duty members of the fairfax county fire and rescue crew and two citizens were at the scene. they quickly rushed over and attempted to pull him from the wreckage. sadly, officer young was pronounced dead at the hospital. his brother dale is also an officer for the county and he says chris young inspired him to join the force. >> i have the question of why him, why so soon. hopefully, i can figure out why.

. >> fox 5's lauren demarco has been following this story all morning long and joins us live from the newsroom now with the latest. good morning. >> good morning, tony. a lot of back and forth over the fate of 31-year-old justin wolfe. much of it coming down to the wire. wolfe was convicted in 2001 and has been facing death penalty charges at one point for his part in arranging the murder of his marijuana supplier. it was overturned in 2001 by a judge who said prosecutors withheld crucial testimony. he was ordered retried. last week the judge ordered wolfe released by 5:00 p.m. yesterday. an hour before that, the court of appeals halted the order. this morning wolfe is in jail. his lawyers say they are optimistic. >> we would have preferred for it to not have been stayed, but we have every reason to be hopeful. we believe the order was correct and we're confident that that ultimately will be the decision of the court of appeals as well. >> the victim was shot outside his town house in virginia in 2001. the man convicted of pulling the trigger testified as part of a plea deal that wolf

lauren demarco is live in the newsroom with the details. >> reporter: justin wolfe was convicted in 2001 for his part in arranging the murder of a marijuana supplier. the case was overturned in 2011 by a u.s. district judge who claimed prince william county prosecutors withheld crucial information from defense lawyers and coerced testimony from a key witness. judge ordered prosecutors to retry wolfe in 120 days or release him. last week, judge ruled prosecutors did not meet that deadline. he ordered wolfe be released by 5:00 p.m. yesterday but just about an hour before that, the fourth circuit court after peels halted the order. despite the last-minute shake- up. wolfe's lawyers remain optimistic. >> we would have preferred for for it to not be stayed but we have every reason to be hopeful. we believe judge jackson's orders with correct and we're confident that that ultimately will be the decision of the court of appeals as well. >> reporter: we also spoke with the father of the victim, danny petrole, jr. his father says he believes justin did have a role in his son's murder but has sinc
