and lauren fox is joining us now.e how these are going to land in terms of the statements from both sides. what are you hearing behind the scenes from republicans who might privately hold very different feelings about january 6? >> yeah, phil, this is a familiar playbook we've seen repeatedly on capitol hill. what is different about this indictment is how it personally affected members of congress on that day on january 6 when they were trying to certify the election. and you do hear from republican leaders very swift statements yesterday basically defending president trump and his actions arguing that the justice department is weaponweaponize. and some of his staufnchest dwern defenders who want go after jack smith and funding that office. but this was an orchestrated effort to make sure that donald trump had defense from republicans on capitol hill. they were coordinating that response making sure that they were in a position to defend him. meanwhile, in the senate you see a different story playing out and that is b

lauren fox is on the hill. republicans how would when they learned of the plea deal.hey were also asking for repeatedly a special counsel in this probe. now david weiss has been elevated to special counsel. what are you hearing from republican lawmakers? >> alex, it's still not easing republicans, that there's some kind of sweetheart deal for the president's son. they present that without clear evidence, but one thing early sentiments were getting is this just simply can't be trusted. here is one republican, a spokesman for the committee, russell dye, who says david weiss can't be trusted, and this is a new way to whitewash the biden family corruption. weiss signed off a plea deal that was so awful and unfair a federal judge rejected. we will continue -- david weiss was in negotiations with the house committee to potentially appear before them in september. as my colleague jeremy erb pointed out in recent reporting is that the view is that could be complicated, in part because a special counsel would not typically testify before congress as an investigation continues
