cnn's lauren fox is on capitol hill. lauren, tell us what we'll see today. a whimper? >> i think we all expect the president will be acquitted, jim, in just a couple of hours. that is all but certain. but there are some members worth watching, including mitt romney. that republican from utah, a moderate member who voted for more witnesses. of course, didn't have the votes with other republicans to make it happen. but we still don't know how he plans to vote today, whether he would vote to remove the president from office for what he is alleged of doing. the other things to watch, three moderate democrats who have not said yet how they plan to vote, including doug jones of alabama, who is up for re-election in 2020. i'll tell you, jim, senators are ready to move on from this. but the question is whether they can repair relationships that have really been damaged over the last three weeks. really last four months of this investigation. this impeachment endeavor. i think that is one of the key questions we're walking away from today. and conversations i've had

our congressional reporter lauren fox is on capitol hill, john harwood at the white house. lauren, let's begin with you. walk us through what is going to happen today. >> well, starting in a couple hours, poppy, around 11:00 this morning, you will expect to hear closing arguments from both the house managers and the president's defense team. after that senators will have an opportunity this afternoon to start this statements on the senate floor about why they are going to vote either to remove the president or vote against removing him depending on what they have chosen to do. those speeches will continue tomorrow and wednesday morning. them at 4:00 on wednesday, that very crucial vote that we expect the president will be acquitted of all the charges against him. the president is going to have to deliver his state of the union tuesday night with the air of impeachment hanging over him, that was because democrats wanted to make sure that was the air in which he had to deliver the speech. it's a very unusual situation where the president is going to be giving this address that

lauren fox on capitol hill, who are you looking at and why?ter: well, i'm going to be looking to see what the democrats say, some of the undecided democrats, chris, people like kirsten sinema, very silent throughout the entire process on whether or not she will vote to remove the president or not. also looking out for doug jones, who is up for re-election this year, in the state of alabama, of course, a very conservative state to be running for re-election as a democrat, as well as someone like joe manchin, who is not up for re-election, but has an independent streak, doesn't always vote with the democratic caucus. on the republican side, a couple of key voices to be looking out for, susan collins up for re-election in 2020, she, of course, voted in support of witnesses along with mitt romney. he's another person to be looking at. then, of course, lamar alexander, the most watched member last week, we were only anticipating whether or not he was going to vote to support witnesses or not. he ultimately voted against witnesses and, of course, sa

lauren fox is on capitol hill. what do you hear on the hill now? >> reporter: the reaction yesterday, reacting to mitt romney's announcement on the floor, was really mixed. democrats coming off the floor and i was standing there right after the speech, were coming off with tears in their eyes, kate. it was a very emotional moment for many democrats who thought that no one in the republican party was going to vote with them to remove the president from office. it was a shocking and surprising moment, but i will tell you that republicans were also shocked and also surprised because their viewpoint was that they were going to hold together, mitt romney was essentially going to stick with the party that there was no way he was going to vote the way he did, that eventually he would come around, even though behind closed doors he had made it very clear to his colleagues that he wanted more evidence, he wanted more witnesses, and they largely viewed that as just the new senator trying to get this off of his chest. we know now that all along the plan event
