the closest i saw was lauren hogg.er the year -- i met her every three or four weeks. her progression over the year was kind of amazing. >> what happened? >> she got better each time i saw her. three months after, i talked to her and her mom and david what do you think about lauren. she'd say, i'm doing much better. then mom would say, she's still having nightmares. >> there is a lesson here that action does heal. somehow they fastened on that themselves or we could have never known that. listen to what the kids have done in a year. immediately they marched on their state capitol. they immediately swung into action mode. >> in a week. >> we were there covering it. they managed to get florida to change their gun laws. they raised the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21. they banned the sale of bump stocks. they gave law enforcement greater power to seize weapons and ammo from the mentally unfit which this shooter obviously was. it goes on and on what they were able to do. now from where you sit, i know i per

. >> and you know, closest actually -- david's sister lauren hogg is amazing.he was the closest i saw to that early on. i met her in the kitchen after talking to david a month out. she looked pretty bad. and i saw her every three to four weeks for much of the next year. each time, you could see the improvement on her face and i talked to her several months into this because i didn't want to speak too soon. i asked her, what i'm seeing, is that how you're feeling? she said yeah, i'm definitely getting better. then i talked to their mom rebecca who is amazing and hysterical. she said yeah, but she's also still having nightmares. >> right. >> for the story tellers, too, you had two episodes of secondary ptsd. describe that, describe the impact on the story tellers, the reporters like yourselves. >> yeah, i didn't know that existed. until well into the first year. i went to a conference and heard dr. akberg who started an organization at columbia, the center for journalism and trauma. oh, wow he's describing. i had depression pretty bad that year and got treatment

. >> reporter: lauren hogg's life was changed forever that day. >> it has felt like the longest year but at the same time, it's felt like it's gone by in a flash. >> reporter: victims of the parkland shooting remembered at memorials at this week's anniversary. >> i love my son. i haven't heard his voice for 365 days. i have gotten e-mails. i have gotten letters, but i haven't gotten anything from him. >> reporter: many in parkland turning their anguish into activism. >> when politicians send their thoughts and prayers with no action, we say no more. >> reporter: since parkland, 25 states have passed gun safety legislation, a bill to tighten background checks is moving forward in congress and last week, the house held its first hearing on gun violence in nearly a decade. despite that progress, there were 107 shootings on school grounds since last february, and more than 14,000 americans were killed by gun violence. those statistics drawing advocates and families of the victims like parkland parent fred guttenberg to fight for change. >> we're not done yet, but we are not going away. a
