lauren martinez, abc seven news. here's.t. >> all of california's recent rain has created an unusual sight in one of the driest places in america. we're talking about a lake in death valley, california's recent winter rainfall dumped more than five inches on that region alone. it created a lake that six miles long and three miles wide. but only about a foot deep. death valley's new lake water is attracting visitors to one of the hottest places on earth. death valley normally receives less than two inches of rain each year on average. the last time the lake appeared was 19 years ago, so it really puts it in perspective. and for the rain totals here in the bay area, lisa is tracking those numbers and we've certainly had a lot of it. how are we stacking up so far this year? you know we're doing great. >> we've had some nice breaks in between the storms with several inches of rain, and this is considered another nice break before we get back into it at the end of the week, where we're going to see it looks like at least an inch,

. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. that is cute. >> automated vehicle company waymo is looking to expand its driverless operations beyond san francisco. the company recently submitted a plan with the state's public utilities commission to operate on the peninsula, as well as in los angeles, but there has also been pushback from state lawmakers, claiming that local governments should make their own regulations regarding driverless vehicles. meanwhile, local communities are stepping up their efforts to prepare for the new wave of automated vehicles, making sure that the streets uh- pavement markings, the signage, the signals, all of that is a properly uh- upgrade to be able to be recognized by the computers. lawmakers say they want to make sure the rollout of this new technology happens very safely. at&t is pushing for a regulatory change that could mean the end of landlines for their customers in california, but that could leave many people, especially in rural areas, without any communication . 80 year old pat pereira
