barbara lee and lauren taylor will go head to head in a debate with hundreds of thousands of dollars flooding the race, lee gains an edge from outside labor funding. the debate begins at 6 p.m. as voters prepare for that april 15th special election. we are now on the map in sonoma county, where seven students at sonoma state university filed suit against the school to stop its plan to cut athletics and other programs. they say they have to do it because of a $24 million budget shortfall. so the students attorney argued the university violated those legal requirements by failing to consult with students and staff and coaches before going ahead and making those cuts. the lawsuit demands the school reverse course, claiming the cuts won't actually save the millions of dollars that the university claims it will. >>>>just to consult with the the, the interested parties here. this would be the students, obviously, the professors, the staff, the coaches that are, you know, employees, some of them long time employees of this, of the school, and none of that happened. >reed>so we reached out t

last night, retired congresswoman barbara lee and former council member lauren taylor squared off inng numerous issues in the 2022 mayoral race. taylor was narrowly defeated by the now recalled sheng thao. he change for voters. what oaklandd needs right now is something different. oakland needs fresh energy, new leadership, someone who is unencumbered by the existing establishment. lee, meanwhile, tried to appeal to voters as a veteran politician, warning them not to be fooled by her opponents messaging. i also want to remind you that many of these decisions that were made that brought us to this crisis occurred by his votes when he was on the city council. so please don't be deceived by all of this. other candidates, meanwhile, claim they were intentionally left out of the debate, which required candidates to raise at least $75,000 for their campaign to qualify. lee and taylor are the only ones who met that threshold. the special election takes place on april 15th. new developments. in the case of a man recently arrested in connection with the overdose deaths of two north bay teens.

the two top candidates, barbara lee and lauren taylor, agree oakland is struggling for a variety of reasons. both say none can be solved overnight, and seeing various groups working together would help. public safety remains the top concern. both candidates want to give the police department more resources to fight crime. >> we know where the gun violence is occurring. we've got to get the guns off the streets of oakland. gun buybacks, working with our violence interrupters, i've been able to fund a variety of organizations. ceasefire integrated with the police department. >> there were calls to defund the police. i stood firm against taking away $50 million from our police department, because i knew that there was no plan to keep people safe when those resources were extracted. >> both lee and taylor discussed changing city policies or laws, such as modifying the police pursuit policy and maintaining distances between homeless encampments and schools, parks and waterways. now, this debate was open to any candidate who raised at least $75,000. of the nine candidates, only lee and taylor met
