jeff is an adventurist and this is a lava lake at the bottom of an island. it's a chain of volcanic islands in the south pacific. he is standing at the edge of a volcanic lake. it's $212 2100 degrees fahrenhe. he's wearing breathing apparatus to be there. it took them about 25 days to achieve this. they had to run a string of ropes down into the crater of a volcano. with stand crumby weather. >> he looks like he's standing on the surface of the sun. >> to explain what it feels like. >> it's only really truly hot when you're on the edge of the lake. we did a bit of a test with out the breathing and apparatus and the suit. you could stand the heat for roughly 6 seconds and then you had to run away. >> how close did you get to the lava? >> probably about 80 feet. >> what is your body feeling? what is the experience like. >> it might as well be on the surface of the sun. i was able to with stand the heat for 40 minutes until the air ran out. it was really an out-of-world experience. >> were you worried about your equipment? >> we took the video camera how way dow

just 10,000 years ago, a lava lake filled this crater complex. - what you have here is the underside a miniature lava tube. strieker: at its peak, waves of molten lava washed over the crater's rim. - as it fills up, it would just go over the sides like water spilling out of a bathtub. strieker: the sheets of lava can still be seen, their undersides a bright red. part of black butte is open to mining. the rock is sold for decorative siding. a checkerboard of red and black shows where darker outer layers have been removed. but about 5,000 acres is designated as a wilderness study area. - blm has a multiple-use management mandate, and that includes conservation. it's not just oil and gas. it's not just mining and timber and recreation. it's actually, what are we doing to conserve and protect these national treasures that we have? strieker: the bureau of land management is required to conserve this area's wilderness qualities until congress decides whether or not to permanently protect this often-overlooked geologic gem. for this american land, i'm gary strieker.
