let's go to ed lavandera. he's joining us as well. of damage are you seeing where you are? >> well, you know, wolf, today has been just simply an amazing day considering this is a part of the country used to seeing these types of storms, especially this time of year. but the video images you've been showing have really stunned people around here. the kind of damage we're seeing around here, wolf, is very similar to this. this is a neighborhood in lancaster. very hard hit. almost looks like a direct hit here in this area where the city of -- the mayor of the city of lancaster says some 300 homes and builds were destroyed or damaged because of the storm that ripped through here. this is a sight that caught my attention here, wolf. this is a ladder that takes people into their attics in their home. this ladder just strewn out here on the lawn, sucked out of these homes. that's what a lot of people who described who were inside their homes when this tornado struck is that force and that feeling that people got that the storm was essential

here's ed lavandera. >> reporter: kayla golden was doing what mothers do, caring for her newborn babyee day old son keegan to a doctor's checkup. that's when police say she was confronted by another woman, a stranger. witnesses say an argument erupted. then horrifying sounds. >> i was struggling, i didn't know what was going on. but after i heard -- after the fourth gunshot, then i knew something was going on. >> reporter: the attacker shot kayla golden several times in the chest. then snatched the baby. witnesses say golden even after she was shot could be heard screaming "my baby." >> the mother of the three-day-old baby was shot, and she tried to get the child from the vehicle. and she was dragged to the ground as the car took off. >> reporter: an amber alert is issued and detectives are searching for a description of the getaway car and find it in montgomery county, texas, near houston. a s.w.a.t. team descends on the apartment, and arrest 30-year-old verna dian mcclain. a short time later, they find baby keegan alive and unharmed with mcclain's sister in a neighboring county that

just got to dallas is our reporter ed lavandera. you just got there. what damage have you seen?rter: we're witnessing an incredible story of survival in the city of arlington. i want to give you a quick piece of video to set this up in arlington. the video you're seeing was shot by a neighbor who lives across the street from the lawrence family. nicole lawrence and her two sons were there. the family was having a hard time seeing through the trees just what was coming their way. as the video starts to progress, you can see the tornado -- what they came to learn was a tornado was getting much closer, and you can see the wind starting to suck debris and tvs and other belongings out of their garage. that family ducked for cover, but it was the lawrence family that was inside the house that you see behind me. here is nicole lawrence, who survived this incredible situation. she was in the house, wolf, with her two sons. i walked through the house just a little while ago. i cannot believe you're standing here next to me. >> it's only by god's grace that i'm here. >> reporter: it's har
