. >> reporter: bertiia laverne vividly remembers her friend's face.ught she could save him. >> i felt him breathe. >> reporter: laverne said she was a few feet away from her friend and co-worker vishnu pandit when gunfire parade around the office. you almost got hit yourself, right? >> yes, the bullet missed me because we were already -- i was already moving, so the bullet missed me and it shattered the glass right next to where my head was. >> reporter: pandit was down but laverne said when she checked his pulse, it was strong. she and her co-workers ignored their own safety and what happened next, when the shooter was still in the rampage was right out of a movie. the security guards showed up, they helped me get him to a chair to wheel him to the stairs. we put him in the emergency evacuation chair and i was talking to him and praying the whole entire time. >> reporter: what were you saying to him? >> that -- i prayed that god would protect him and that we need him here. and that his friends loved him. >> reporter: lavern, a former navy specialist

lavern lee was our red cross workers stationed at a club in india in 1945. calcutta was a place for rest and relaxation for black and white soldiers. the army had build a new swimming pool for soldiers and rick cross workers to use. a grand opening celebration was planned for july 4th for white personnel and a separate for black personnel on july 3rd. the black troops and red cross workers led decided to boycott the july 3rd party. she wrote to the red cross headquarters, july 4th is a day long honored and respected by negro's as will as of americans for significance to democracy and the principles on which our government was founded such a day of celebration involving americans anywhere on the face of the glow becomes an insult to whenever minority group is excluded from participation. african-american entertainers and movie stars did their part for the war effort, just as their white counterparts did, but they faced unique obstacles. no matter how successful they were, african-american entertainers were not immune to racism. acclaim as a broadway performer

. >> reporter: it started with a simple trip to the front door at a home on laverne drive in san leandroo young men ring the bell and wait. it's just before 9:00 in the morning. >> they look a little nervous as you can see. waiting to see if anyone shows to the door. this is common throughout the bay area right now. >> reporter: when no one answers the home surveillance video shows the two jumping a fence to a side yard. they pry off a window screen, jump through it, and leave less than two minutes later. while stuffing jewelry and other valuables into their pants. san leandro police hope the public recognizes these two suspects. like they did back in february in another burglary case. soon after this video aired on abc 7 news, police received several tips that led to an arrest. >> really within a couple of days we had people identified in it. at least one of them was arrested. and i know that both of them were identified from really the footage. >> reporter: in this case, anyone with information is asked to contact san leandro police. >> police are searching for a man wanted for a serie
