valley and elizabeth wenger is watching the impact on your commute but we start with meteorologist lawrence karnow in the weather center. it is a doozy. >> it is. some kind of storm out there now. in fact, we're seeing some very heavy rainfall and some strong gusty winds showing up outside. at this hour we have another strong line of storms loving through. we had one earlier in the night but now the secondary wave is coming through and you can see on doppler radar lots of yellow out there. san jose it is seeing some showers right now, some heavier rain earlier. that's soon going to be picking up. you can see north in sunnyvale that we have some stronger storms that will be sliding in your direction. so if you are heading out be careful. we have the rain and some pockets of heavy rainfall into oakland, stretching across the bay into south san francisco. a little further to the north we can see the back side of the storm system. we mentioned the possibility of flooding in petaluma. they are seeing very heavy downpours right now. expecting some flooding along the penngrove stream there. so that's exp

we'll get your forecast from lawrence karnow in just a moment, and check with cate caugiran at sfo. our live coverage begins with anne makovec in redwood city, though. >> reporter: good morning. it's wet out here. the rain is coming down as we speak. i was driving down from san francisco and there did seem to be a lot more traffic than normal during the early-morning hours. so a lot of people travelin for the thanksgiving holiday. it used to be the busiest travel holiday but it doesn't appear to be. but there is more traffic on the roads and they are wet. i hydroplaned a couple of times coming down here on highway 101. here are picture we shot at the redwood city caltrains station. people doing planes, trains and automobiles for their thanksgiving travel. we are waiting for things to pick up. it's only 5 a.m. but we'll talk to people about how the rain is impacting their travel plans. but first let's check in with lawrence karnow because he has more information on how long this rain is going to last. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the rain continues around the bay ar

first we kick it off with meteorologist lawrence karnow in the cbs 5 weather center for more rain i guess, huh? >> yeah. boy that, first storm kicked down the door. this next storm system will roll through and it's going to bring with it heavy rain. this next storm though different. it's a slow moving storm and because of that, it's going to be able to drop a tremendous amount of rain. right now, we are seeing a few light showers out ahead of the system. mostly from the warm front. you can see some of that falling in the north bay now near novato, along one. watch out there. we are going to see some of the pop-up showers throughout the morning especially in the north bay but then that's going to start to sag further south in the afternoon. but again, this is a slow- moving storm so it will take some time to get here. here it is still well to the north of the bay area. there's another one that's developing behind that. this is all going to begin to move onshore in the latter part of the day. lots of clouds and scattered light shower and toward the afternoon showers pick up in the south bay

but first let's get to meteorologist lawrence karnow in the weather center with when that rain will start. >> this is a slow-moving storm and we'll see heavy rainfall with subtropical moisture. hi-def doppler right now is showing you scattered showers so heavy rain won't be here until latter part of the day and overnight tonight. we are seeing scattered light showers in the north bay now so if you are heading there, expect pop-up showers and nuisance rainfall changing into the afternoon hours. the storm door is open. this next storm system just developing setting itself up. a lot of clouds out ahead of the front of this one so far and that's touching off light showers. latest computer models this gets interesting is we are going to see a few more showers beginning to sag further south. but rain picks up in the afternoon in the north bay. this is the latest computer model run a little faster with movement to begin with but by the afternoon, things begin to pick up here. but then overnight this is a very slow mover and that's why we're concerned. it takes almost the entire night before it b

lawrence karnow, we have a bit of a wet start but things are looking up. >> yeah. things are looking up nicely if you are traveling now. i think things are drying out nicely, too. high-def doppler radar showing you things quieting down. of course, we had a lot of activity early on today. a lot of rain showing up outside, some gusty winds overnight. but pop-up showers over the mountaintops but otherwise we're drying out, beautiful clouds cumulus clouds floating on through. temperatures right now running into the 60s outside. fairly mild right now toward mount diablo. some of the clouds continuing. otherwise, we're drying those things out and looks like tonight we could see some low clouds and some fog. going to have to watch out for that. but dry days are ahead for the foreseeable future. we have a trough along the west coast here bringing with it the cold front that brought the stormy weather. but high pressure sneaking in behind it now. so as it builds in, we are drying things out for the remainder of the afternoon and it looks like the days ahead. showers moving

one busy guy today our meteorologist lawrence karnow. it's nonstop from the get-go because it's a slow-moving storm. it's different than the last one that moved through. urban and small stream flood advisory for most of the bay area except napa and sonoma counties. we have to watch out for flooding in the san jose area. they continue to see rain coming down there. moderate to heavy rain. they are not the only ones. east bay seeing plenty of rain, as well. but we are starting to get an idea we may be getting toward the back side but the rainfall is impressive. this is about the last 12 hours. almost 8" of rain in venado in the north bay, over 7" and counting in mount umunum in the santa cruz mountains, over 3" in santa rosa an inch in san francisco, 1.47" in concord, 1.19" in san jose. we are seeing the become side of this coming up here. another storm on the way will bring heavy rain and flooding. we'll keep our eyes on that for you. >> thank you. >>> a cbs 5 team is out in the storm. we have cate caugiran on the ground in san francisco

brian hackney in for lawrence karnow this morning. >> we have dense fog around the bay area this morning. visibility down to near zero in spots. that fog will give away to sunshine earlier today than it did yesterday and we'll expect numbers mostly in the low 50s except inland where it will be chillily. san -- chillier. oakland at 52. san jose at 43. and here's what it looks like r -- for 8 to 14 days over the west coast. it will be dry in the southwest but if you look at where there's a preponderance of rain, it's going to go wetter than usual for early december. for the bay area, doesn't look bad. temperatures in the mid-60s for the most part. san francisco a high of 62. 62 at oakland. and san jose, 66 degrees. and in the extended forecast, couple of clear days to start the week, but increasing clouds lead to rain and wind, on wednesday, on thursday, on friday, on saturday, on sunday, it's going to get wet in the bay area. it will be a big week for the radar. how is the affecting the -- how is the fog affecting the traffic, elizabeth has that. >>> you can see coming up 280 you can bare

we have tomorrow coverage with lawrence karnow and elissa harrington but we begin with cate caugiranthe richmond/san rafael bridge where winds are the story. >> reporter: i'm not wearing a hat. the wind is blowing straight through my hair now. we are hearing that winds are sustained at about 25 miles per hour at sfo. in oakland they are 16 miles per hour. it's going to get worse with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. look at the flagpoles and the trees. you can see just how strong that wind is blowing here on the bridge. now, if you combine those winds with the rain and a busy morning commute, we are looking at potentially dangerous driving conditions. now, with high winds on the bridge, chp says it is a possibility they could ask trucks to find alternative routes if winds pick up to dangerous speeds. now, it is inevitable when weather like this hits the bay area that oil comes up from the roads making them slicker than normal. chp officers told thus morning, the most common mistake that drivers make in weather conditions like these. >> drive too fast. when people drive too fast, t

. >> our live team coverage begins with lawrence karnow though checking this morning's weather. it's sloppy. >> very wet start to the day around the bay area. the showers coming in overnight that cold front bringing some strong gusty winds and that rain still falling in parts of the bay area. let's look at our high-def doppler radar. you can see the showers now beginning to taper off a little bit even more so than this last hour as we're still seeing pockets of rain rainfall into the east bay. livermore, pleasanton, watch out on the 680, 580. we have some showers continuing in that direction. we are going to see more of that throughout the morning hours. but i think as we get to the afternoon, things will dry out. mostly cloudy skies, wet outside so when we're not seeing rain you may see heavy drizzle. the temperatures are very mild into the 50s and also the 60s. now, i think as you head out today you will see a lot of clouds but by the afternoon we are going to get on the back side of this cold front so the clouds likely to break a little bit becoming partly cloudy and dry the

elizabeth wenger is watching the impact on the commute but first lawrence karnow is in the weather centerhave been busy all morning. >> tremendous storm making its way through the bay area right now and our hi-def doppler showing we're not done yet. a lot of heavy rainfall continuing to fall outside into the south bay. the focus going to shift in that direction throughout the morning hours. you can see lots of the yellows but notice the green off the coast. we are watching another band enhancing as it approaches the coastline. this is going to focus a little further to the south. i think the santa cruz mountains going to get walloped and that's where they have already put up urban and small stream flood advisories through 11:00 this morning. you can see the heavier amounts of rainfall through portola valley, sunnyvale, saratoga to san jose. you have moderate rain. further north plenty of rain in san francisco, pockets to of heavy veil of in the area of 280. strong band of showers in the east bay through danville, near livermore. that is approaching you. so out the door this morning expect
