let's check in with meteorologist lawrence karnow. >> it's been chilly. cold storms out of the gulf of alaska and, of course, that keeps our temperatures very cold. i think we have some very cold air headed our way. this morning, we are starting out with some scattered showers early on. kind of some nuisance raindrops, not real heavy but we are seeing scattered showers continuing throughout much of the bay area. kind of hit and miss. you can see the speckled green out there as we are seeing light scattered showers and heavy drizzle. it's enough to make it slick if you are traveling outside this morning so be careful. behind this though you have all that cold speckled cloud cover that's going to be pushing into the bay area. that's some cold air dropping in our direction so we are going to keep things unsettled and wet. more storms lining up. outside over the bay cloudy skies some light showers there, temperatures in the 50s. storms brewing and more to come of the we feel talk more about that in a moment. first we go to elissa harrington our reporter out t

[ laughter ] >>> around the bay area we have some good rain coming in and this cold front is a slow- moving system but we are starting to see that slide into parts of the north bay. let's check your high-def doppler radar. you can see some heavy rainfall now sliding in coming down like canned ham there! that's right. it's really starting to dump in parts of the north bay right now along the 101. you can see the yellows and the oranges there. it is really dumping, some of the north bay mountains already nearly 4" of rain. we'll see a lot of heavy rainfall. if it's not in your rainfall, cool temperatures, rain continuing on and off throughout the day and periods of rain through the weekend. we'll have a series of systems slide on through. so here's your cold front that's making its way through the bay area behind all those cold speckled clouds and tomorrow morning could see a good wallop from this system that's off the coas

. >> let's get the latest from cbs 5 meteorologist lawrence karnow. >> for a lot of folks it gets the blood pressure going again. this doesn't look as bad. still the rain in spots. it's dumping in some areas right now. you see on our high-def doppler radar, look at all the yellow off the coastline. that's going to be pushing onshore a little later on. this is not going to be as strong as that last series of storms. a closer look you can see that band of moisture through richmond, berkeley and concord. so good downpours there. but it is going to break up as we head into the afternoon. and we're not expecting to see any flooding from the storm system. here it comes right now. it's moving on through. that batch of moisture just off the coastline about to push onshore. so if you haven't seen rain yet, it's coming. so a messy commute early on this morning, but by the afternoon it breaks up. we may see a little bit of sunshine but temperatures fairly mild. a lot of subtropical moisture out there. so we'll keep you in the 50s and 60s. this may be it for the rain for a while. we'll talk more

he looks a lot like lawrence karnow. >> another cold start to the morning outside but we have major changes coming in our direction in the form of a cold front. look at that. this one's pretty impressive just beginning to slowly work its way into the far northern portions of the state. that will bring with it more clouds throughout the day today and eventually some rain headed in our direction. right now it is mostly clear and again cold in spots although not quite as cold as yesterday. still 29 degrees. that's cold enough, in concord. 32 degrees and freezing in livermore. 38 in san jose and 37 degrees right in san francisco. by the afternoon, those clouds will be rolling in. the temperatures are going to stay fairly cool mainly in the mid- to upper 50s outside. but a pretty vigorous storm headed our way. we are going to see strong gusty winds tonight. and even some heavier amounts of rainfall. we'll have more on that coming up as we'll see the whole pattern open up but first traffic with elizabeth. >> we are going to enjoy this dry commute while we have it and we have one accident out ther

meteorologist lawrence karnow in the weather center. >> we have already seen an inch of rain in some of the wettest parts of the north bay already. this cold front just beginning to slide through the rest of the bay area. let's look at our high-def doppler radar and you can see it breaking apart. this is not like the storms that we had over the past few days. we'll get some rain from this storm system, but it didn't look like we'll see flooding. taking you for a closer look in the north bay you will see showers and a heavier cell further south toward richmond. you will see rain picking up here very shortly. novato, you have some showers there, as well. but this cold front is going to start to fall apart as it moves across the bay area. so everybody is going to see some showers out of this one although it will be more showery than real heavy rainfall and i think as we get toward the afternoon, i think things begin to settle down a little bit. the storm system is going to fall apart, may sneak into sunshine, temperatures mild and into the 60s. so no flooding from this one. just another

so let's get the latest with lawrence karnow. >> we do have some heavy rainfall that's now sliding into the north bay. this is a slow-moving storm system, as many as 4-plus inches in some of the north bay mountains and santa rosa over an inch of rain. you can see on our high-def doppler radar, some of the yellows and oranges already, let's take new for a closer look and you will see plenty of rain just about everywhere you go along the 101 if you are traveling in the north bay, watch out for pockets of some heavy rainfall. this is going to be on and off throughout the morning. and a whole system is sliding out. we have seen strong gusty winds over 30-mile-an-hour gusts, you could see gusts at 50 in the mountains. we'll continue with the rain as it marches south. it is going to be a soggy friday. the temperatures are expected only to be in the 50s. and this storm system opening the door to a series of storms head our way over the weekend. we will have more on that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with gianna. >> lawrence, thank you very much. we are keeping a close eye on the

let's get to meteorologist lawrence karnow with more on that.w. >> yeah, beginning to feel a lot like christmas around the bay area. >> yeah. >> very nice. we could see a couple of snowflakes across some of our higher peaks. that cold air sweeping onshore overnight. we have scattered showers outside right now. our high-def doppler radar is picking up on some of that activity. out on the roads, there are brief periods of downpours expected with these cells moving onshore right now. you can see one of the those sliding in toward berkeley and oakland right along the 880 the 580 and it looks like we have more scattered showers on and off throughout at least the morning hours and then tapering off. but behind that you have all this cold air that's plunging from the gulf of alaska. that's going to keep these temperatures way down. a cool brisk day even if it's dry by the afternoon the the highs only in about the low to the mid-50s so we are going to keep those temperatures down across the board and there are more storms on the way. all right. let's ch
