a very different kind of heat is generated at lawrence livermore national lab, home to the largest laser. scientists have been trying to create a fusion reaction in the lab in hopes of developing a nearly unlimited supply of clean energy. but after 14 years, and over $5 billion, there's a shakeup in the management. amy, let me ask you, why is what they're trying to do there so hard to achieve? >> nuclear fusion, which is what they're trying to do, is one of the sort of holy grails of science. it's something generations of physicists have tried and failed to do. from a science perspective, this is an incredibly cool operation. they are directing 192 lasers. collectively, this is the world's largest laser, at a single capsule the size of one peppercorn. i love that. the idea is that if you can do this right, for one fraction of a second, you would create such heat and such pressure on this capsule, that hydrogen, a capsule full of hydrogen, the hydrogen atoms would fuse together. this is nuclear fusion. not to be confused with nuclear fish shon that happens at power plants every day. this

lawrence. we have problems now on westbound 580 coming through the altamont pass heading into livermore. it's a car fire. and right now it's on the shoulder but fire crews may have to block a lane so this is a busy spot anyway. checking the drive time right now in the red, and likely due to that car fire. that's not helping matters. so that drive time has jumped up to 33 minutes between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. our busiest spots are from tracy all the way towards, well, a little past that vasco road exit. and then some bunching up again approaching the dublin interchange. also, still traffic control in effect eastbound lanes of highway 84 approaching east vineyard avenue the scene of an injury crash and that intersection may be blocked. let's go outside show you a quick live look at the dublin interchange as you can see, starting to get busy in the westbound lanes of 580 through the pleasanton area. and over at the bay bridge they just turned on the metering lights we have a big backup already. well, a backup for this time of the morning anyway. jamming to the overcr

lawrence. we are going to take you over the altamont pass where it's a pretty busy ride on westbound 580 and all the way through the livermore valley. there was an earlier car fire near the dublin interchange. that didn't help the morning commute. it's clear and fire is out. all lanes are back open but the drive time is 34 minutes between the altamont pass and 680. also, we have better news now coming up northbound 101 near candlestick. earlier this morning a truck went off the road into the bay. for a while they blocked a lane with a tow crew to retrieve the vehicle. they did. and so all lanes are back open as of just a couple minutes ago. they canceled that traffic alert. we are seeing a little bit of slowdowns in the area and that is the reason why. so things will recover quickly. coming into san francisco, 101 and 280 are both moving well. on the nimitz accident with injuries. northbound 880 at 7th. you can see slight delays approaching the accident. not too bad just very slight ones right now. but it is possibly still blocking a lane and chp has been out there for a little while on that one. mass transit no delay for an

livermore. and 88 in san jose. much cooler temperatures over the weekend. we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence, everything is quieted down across the bay area. so if you are traveling through vacaville, for example, there was an accident. it was just cleared out of lanes a couple minutes ago eastbound 80 approaching leisuretown road. westbound coming into the city and towards the macarthur maze, everything is pretty quiet. so here's your drive time as you can see from the carquinez bridge to the maze, that is 19 minutes. that's still in the clear. the only real slow spot is through the altamont pass through the livermore valley up to 23 minutes so a few brake lights closer towards vasco road. then we see some improvement. taking you outside, here's a live look closer towards the dublin interchange. and you can see those headlights moving westbound. so pretty typical for this time of the morning. san mateo bridge similar story no delays across the flat section of the span. a quick look at the nimitz as you pass 880 in oakland. you have a trip out of town for the weekend heading towards oakland

livermore, 91 expected in concord and about 82 degrees in san francisco. we'll have more on your weather, guys, coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, lawrence. >>> this morning, several fires are burning throughout the state. they forced hundreds out of their homes. some have lost everything. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran tells us many of the fires are burning up north in napa and sonoma counties. and she joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. firefighters across the state will be back and busy. today's high temperatures will not be doing firefighters any favors. and in some parts of the state, fire crews are hoping that the strong winds help them out. this is especially in southern california where the summit fire in banning is still burning. temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s. from our last update, we know that the summit fire is 35% contained. crews are battling 30-mile-per- hour winds yesterday and they are expected to get stronger by this afternoon. one home has already been destroyed. hundreds were evacuated. and one firefighter has been hurt. neighbors in the area are struggling to deal with

livermore about 70 in concord. and about 61 degrees in san francisco. we have some drier weather on the way. we'll talk about that coming up. >>> let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> reporter: thanks, lawrence. we are watching breaking news out of the south bay this morning. this is video taken early this morning in san jose. the city's 16th homicide, a man's body was found overnight near blossom hill road. all the police activity is confined to a parking lot a jack-in-the-box parking lot so if you are commuting in the area, blossom hill road remains open. so even though police are still out there, you can use it to access highway 85. overnight roadwork at the bay bridge, looks like the eastbound roadwork is still there on the lower deck. but look at this. it is now free and clear on the upper deck and heading towards the bay bridge toll plaza. all tollbooth lanes open now to westbound traffic heading towards san francisco. to our maps, westbound 580 sluggish coming through the altamont pass and the livermore valley. not too bad though yet, 21 minutes the drive time through the altamont pass heading towards the dublin interchange. a check of mass transit is coming up. in the meantime, back
