know, when we talk about this, kevin, i've been reading your columns and watching our friend, lawrence o'donnell'satertown police chief. we speak about boston and we're talking about a very small town with a police force that responded in a firefight, lost one of their own. >> the watertown cops were positively heroic, as were all the law enforcement people. but as you mentioned, watertown cops there. i'm going to guess that they fired more bullets that one exchange with those suspects, than they have fired in that town probably in the history of the department. it was, i mean there were a lot of rounds fired that night. but i do think that you know, there are so many examples of heroism. beyond in a, going back to the first responders on the day, a week ago today. people saw things they never should have seen. and i think the busiest boston police officer for the next week at least and maybe beyond that, is a guy named brian fleming, a sergeant for the boston police department and he runs the counseling services. and is a great guy. and i know brian's out there. and same with the fire department'

cillizza, the filibuster threat, we now know that mitch mcconnell has said he'll sign onto it, as lawrence o'donnell was pointing out last night, leaders do not join filibusters, that's not what they do. so this is very unusual. >> you know, andrea, i think that by making the filibuster so front and center, i think republicans millically at least can really lose on this issue. and i know a lot of people don't see it in the political context, i'll say this -- look, it is very unlikely if up or down votes are given to things like the assault weapons ban, ban on high-capacity magazines. those things are very unlikely to pass. maybe if pat toomey and joe mansion can come to an agreement on expanded background checks, maybe the broader bill passes. in my opinion, the best thing for the republican party to do is say look bring it to the floor, we'll vote on it. because i think it's unlikely that those things particularly assault weapons ban passes. why blockade it with president obama called it a political stunt. why do that when it's unlikely these things that you don't want passed are going to pass, any

joining us from boston, the host of msnbc's "the last word," lawrence o'donnell.n, edward deveau. >> things are moving back to normal here, more so every day. but i was in watertown yesterday with chief ed deveau. that, mika, as everyone now knows is where this story ended. it's where the terror made its final stop. and just so you get a picture of this place, population of 32,000. after midnight in watertown, they have a total of four police officers on patrol in that shift. and that's how many were actually on patrol in watertown at that time in single man cars in watertown. as soon as they knew the action was coming their way, two officers who were on their way home turned around so they had a total of six to respond to this. one car responded to it alone, giving chase. and the very strange thing about this chase as we now know is that the brothers decided to stop. they were ahead. they were getting away. they stopped the car. they got out and they started walking toward this one officer. so ed deveau is in charge of this police department where this incredible
