back to lawrence o'donnell. let's turn a corner.still in terms of the results of last night, what does this mean for the formidable clinton campaign effort? >> well, the thing about unbeatable campaigns is they can't be beaten. so hillary clinton no longer has the unbeatable campaign. sometimes you can get the energy of underdog, but bernie sanders has kind of a permanent underdog advantage in the way that he's campaigning against the establishment, as he puts it. so there is an energy that's unique to that campaign. i want to quick think of what's happening on the republican side. between carly fiorina and chris christie last night, that's 12 points. that's 12 points that has to be get reinstated somewhere on this field. these candidates are much more compatible with john kasich. that came out of the new hampshire strong. christie has to be making phone calls to the fiorina people at this point. >> what can the fiorina people offer. i love watching televised focus groups. she enjoyed some support in those televised focus grums. obv

we'll be checking back in with you very shortly, here in new york city, we're joined on-set by lawrence o'donnell and "washington post" columnist, gene robinson. pleasure to have you here. we have steve kornacki on set with us, and steve has a look at what we know, basically, about who has turned out in south carolina. this is from exit poll dating -- exit poll data. steve, what are we learning so far? >> this is the first wave of exit poll data that's coming in. we can tell you what the electorate's looking like. chris was just talking about the large number of african-americans voting in south carolina. check this out. >> wow. >> what we're seeing, 61% of the democratic data is african-american. in 2008, when barack obama got that huge victory in south carolina, it really put him on course for the nomination. it was only 55%. so right now, we are seeing more african-americans turns out than we did eight years ago. let's look at the ideology. how democrats were voting today. you can see, 23%, very liberal. 29, somewhat liberally. interestingly, this is the fourth democratic contest we've had so

the other night during iowa i asked lawrence o'donnell on the air, what happened to jeb bush?stion to you, is it that simple? >> it is. it's actually i would give a one word and make it trump squared. i think he got it both barrels from donald trump right out of the gate, took him off his game, made him visibly uncomfortable on stage with him, dye min ni diminished his argument and it has been since that time that jeb has tried to get his footing. i don't know. i guess the answer to the question of, you know, $5200 per voter in iowa is why? that is not a ground jeb bush had any footing on. this is the state he could begin to make that footing. certainly south carolina would be in play, even nevada. so there are a lot of things about the jeb bush campaign out of the gate that cause more questions for donors. certainly for the political establishment in washington who had great high hopes. marco rubio has now gun to fill that space and so the fight for a lot of these guys, certainly the governors, kasich, jeb and christie will be to take him down a notch. they have to prove and
