it was all over. >> it was, lawrence o'donnell, reminding us to learn from history. president johnson saw that similar number, a challenger cracking 40% in his own party against a white house veteran and he was out. rfk was in the wings. a lot of details we could get into. we dug into this to present context tonight. how experts knew that an opponent doing that well inside lbj's own party when he had the white house behind him, that could be curtains from lbj. >> in the democratic party, the important point is that there is a contest at all. usually when an incumbent president is running for re-election, nobody in his own party comes in toal challenge him. senator mccarthy has come to challenge him this time. if mccarthy gets 30% of the vote or more against an incumbent president he can legitimately claim a legitimate victory. >> that would mean there's something going on, some problems, some alerts, some serious opposition. mccarthy won 42% in a result seen as stunning at the time. now, there were many factors driving opposition to lbj from vietnam to domestic unres

right after the polls close last night, my colleague lawrence o'donnell said trump's numbers should haveer. that should be alarming for republicans. trump was pulling at about 57% when he said, at that moment, he's pulling in those numbers. then he went on to shy 60% when the vote was all telling. let's listen to some of what lawrence had to say. >> 7%. >> these numbers are disastrous for donald trump. disastrous, okay? the reason i mention the big forgotten ember of south carolina, which is joe biden getting 96%, okay? that's what you're supposed to get. donald trump is not going to come close to that. we don't know what the result of this election is tonight, but it's going to be a very substantial number. it could be a third of the votes. it is going to leave that on the table, belonging to another candidates, all you, all you need is 5% of the 30%. we're talking about a sliver. that's all you need to not vote for donald trump. >> so, you have these exit polls, they're showing nearly three out of four voters who identify as moderate or liberal. they are more likely to vote for haley.

ruling are my good friends and colleagues, the hardest bookings in america, rachel maddow and lawrence o'donnell. i am honored to have you on this program. rachel, we haven't heard from you today, lawrence, we haven't heard from you today. i will let you get the first word here, but what was your reaction to what feels like a day of reckoning for donald trump? >> it is a day of reckoning, almost literally, for sure. and it is also one of a number of really important court proceedings that are going to have really important consequences for him. i feel like once i read as much as they could've the ruling, a lot of it is dense, what a lot of it makes sense. once we saw letitia james's explanation of what happened, we saw trump's reaction to, it i kind of setback and i realized , my biggest take away from this is that we need to protect the rule of law. that this is a candidate who is promising to basically dismantle the american system of government, he has been raging against the judiciary, and judges, and juries, and lawyers, and plaintiffs, and the whole system that is starting to hold him to a
