and lawrence pintak, dean of the edward r.hool of journalism at washington state university, and a former middle east correspondent for cbs news who's written widely on media in the middle east. shibley telhami, a piece of this unrest clearly seems to involve very different understandings of the notion of free speech and responsibility. what do you see? >> i... first i done think it's really about free speech. i know free speech is important and there's no question that in arab, in muslim countries's understanding the nature of free speech in the west is difficult n part because clearly they haven't experienced the kind of democracies, including the countries that are now changing. and one cannot expect them to fully understand the consequences or have thought them out. we think about our democracy when women got rights here; when african-americans got rights here. so it's evolving. no question there is that problem. but i think it's really not so much about free speech. i think no matter what we do or so there are two things
