and colonel layton, give me your reaction to the numbers that you just saw? >> john, i think that the american people are tuned into the world situation and when they expect a terrorist attack like the polls show, it can clear that they understand what the risks are. we are first of all living in a post-9-1-1 world. and that's why people are focused on these things. they see what's happening in paris, and they see what's happening in syria with isil and other elements there and they realize that the world is a dangerous please, and i think that's something that the president can take away and perhaps craft a message to not only reassure the american people, but also let them know what the future holds and what we're doing to try to protect our country. >> in many ways, the u.s. is fighting a different enemy in isil ill. and we know the president is going to support the congress in the use of force against isil. and what is the president going to say tonight to reassure the nation as it's ally? >> the president could take a brief moment within his speech and s

let's go to a retired air force colonel, cedric layton joining us from washington this morning. is there any proof that al-qaeda in the arabian peninsula operating out of yemen was directly involved in this attack in paris? >> it seems as if the proof is at best circumstance at this point, at least what's publicly available. you have movements such as kouachi going to yemen possibly using his older brother's passport. there was definitely a connection there. the command of these terror attacks may not have been a realtime command structure. it's not like in the military or in law enforcement where when you want to execute something you give a command and make it happen immediately or at least usually you do. in this case, probably gave a general instruction and said go do this, but do it at a time of your choosing, when a certain signal comes up and we don't know yet if they did it that way or the way they had more direct control. >> interesting that you bring up the command structure of al-qaeda. has that changed much? you look at 9/11, you saw terror attacks in madrid, killing
