lbj comes along in a tragic murder. how did that relationship change and in what way and i would like to hear you talk about this and whether or not john kennedysay profile with the press heightens his profile around the world and whether or not the changed relationship had an effect on the profile. >> that's a great question. john f. kennedy was a journalist that worked after he came back from combat and he admired journalists and thought he might buyr a newspaper. there was a distinct possibility he would have done it. he appreciated the state as a part of american democracy. but he also knew the value in cultivating those relationships and i can tell you he had a few scars from being kicked metaphorically but kennedy had respect for what he did. he also knew the cloud of "time" magazine. it was a behemoth at the time. things start to fade when during the johnson presidency. this creates a liberal tied that flows into the presidency. faith in government in 1964 at 77% and that is largely because of john f. kennedy hav

thank you for being here and the lbj special is really lovely. congrats on that. >> thank you. >>... a specialist in both these presidents. what would you look for as a voter in your modern president? say again? i'm so sorry. what do you look for in a president? you as like a scholar of the presidency. you know, i i've been asked this before and i think at the end of the day all presi >> i've been asked that before anything at the end of the day president are different. they come in with different skill sets and experiences. they come in with different visions and outlooks on the world and i think it's hard to take any leader with -- paint in the lead with the same brush. we should expect different things in different leaders because not everyone is capable the same things. the best we can expect from our president is they lead the country and they do their best. and most of the president's in myel lifetime, in my view, have help up to that criteria. they did their best and they love their country. john f. kennedy -- john f. kennedy certainly fit

>> people talk about the kennedys and lbj, and the kennedys were noton monolithic. there were different kennedy's and the different relationships but the relationship between jack kennedy and lyndon johnson was very amicable. there was mutual respect, big a drink at times,em but mitchell respect. john kennedy remembered when he wanted to get something done as a senator from massachusetts, largely a backbencher who didn't achievet a whole lot relative to the peers he had in the upper chamber, but he remembers here to go to lyndon johnson, the all-powerful senate majorityy leader. his father joe kennedy the candy patriarch had enormous respect for lyndon johnson. in fact, he toldt us on don't take the secod spot on the 1956 democratic ticket and less lyndon johnson is the presidential nominee. and he even offers to fund the campaign of lyndon johnson chooses to run. so there was great respect there. the confusion about this comes where bobby kennedy comes in. bobby kennedy despised for lyndon johnson, lyndon johnson didn't feel any a differentlype about bobby kennedy.

it was only lbj who got it all through. but i began to see as we went through the boxes, the inspiration that john kennedy had provided. and it made me feel differently. jfk and him feel differently about. lbj it's almost like they were two halves of a whole and and it really, i know in those last years his life, especially the last months when he kept thinking i was going to help write a book about this, that it gave him sense of purpose that made him handle the fact that he knew that cancer was taking his life away. but he felt a sense of fulfillment as he looked back. what not only he had done, but what the people around him had done in people that he'd worked with and the colleagues. and it was that sense of your legacy before you die that made him sense a sense of feeling good. it meant these boxes mean everything. me and now they're going to be here in texas. don. don, what were your impressions when you first discovered this trove of and how did your thought process develop as you learned more? well, i mean you know,

and he started working for lbj when lbj was vice president. and then in the in november 63, as lbj was moving into the white house, he wanted to bring waldron with him as as a white house staffer. and walter was being, it was going through a security clearance investigation, as you had to do to be to work the white house. and in the process of that, it was discovered that robert waldron was gay and in an instant he was kicked off staff. his white house pass was revoked and his political career was ended. and it's a very tragic story that i tell i tell it for the first time. i'm proud to say that not even robert caro was was aware of this story. i actually informed him about it. take that. robert caro. i actually i discovered part of story in the lbj library, but i also discovered the bulk of it through. waldron's, fbi, which i had declassified about a 1000 pages and in that fbi file. i found the letter that waldron wrote to the man who outed him to the civil service commission, which was the bureau ocracy in charge of these investigations. it'

a few thoughts about what i have seen in three years as a director of the lbj library. i came to this world after spending 30 years as either a journalist or an academic, a profession that entails certain adversarial relationship and maybe friendly skepticism about the prerogatives of government and what i learned has been really fascinating and two particular observations i would like to share. when is easy which is simply to call attention to the professionalism, the dedication of the people who do this work on a daily basis. it is inspiring for me to see the hard work and dedication that goes into this work to find the balance referenced at so many points, between the desire we all share for openness and recognition that there are secrets that need to be kept. my second strong impression formed across my time as director is the very worrying shortage of resources going into the declassification work we would acknowledge as important. what we could do is provide information about what is going on by providing example of what may be happening across the agency. there i

great, great writer bob caro wrote of lbj books about the local, local hero lbj and he was once asked what was the secret to getting people the details in these books? have you read them? are a bit crazy details and he just said he would yell at subjects make me see it and they'd be like, well, he standing in the oval office make me see it, right? and then well and then finally people be like, he was wearing a gray suit. it was buttoned only in the middle button. he walked over, he put it and suddenly all these like physical memories are coming out. and the books are made by that that i'm begging the democrats make me see it. make me see what the world looks like when you went so last thing i want to say on that democracy we yes. talk about the threat to democracy. but i would love hear from joe biden why a threat to democracy? because actually something no democrat will tell you for, reasons that boggles my mind. there's threat to democracy right now because we're trying do an awesome thing in this country. we are trying to build a multi racial democracy in way that is actually prett
