leana wen, the former new york city health commissioner. dr. wen, you hear the humility. for somebody else. happening in the middle of a pandemic at the time when other key jobs including when there's no director of the food and drug administration, the fda right now, that's a big challenge for the white house? >> it is, so i do want to add on to what elizabeth was saying in that dr. collins is a national treasure. he's led so many important scientific discoveries. the nih also funds a lot of academic research done in institutions around the country. and there are so many treatments and discoveries that we have to credit dr. collins and his leadership for. but you're right, it is a change during a pandemic. the lack of an fda commissioner now, nine months into the biden administration, i think it's something that a lot of people just do not understand. the fda is one of the most important agencies in the pandemic response. i mean, think about what's on the fda's docket right now. boosters, vaccines for younger kids, treatments, tests even are approved by the fda. so, we r

. >> so let's bring in leana wen, an e.r. doctor. great to have you here. that is just the latest information that victor just read. so multiple mia loma and parkinson's and he was immunocompromised and he got his second shot in february and it is so sad to hear that he was scheduled for his booster shot this week when he got ill and had to go to the hospital. but given how complicated we now know his medical history was, would the booster shot have saved his life for somebody with that profile? >> well, it might have helped. but let's take a step back and look at his respecters. the first is that he is already medically fragile. meaning because of age being 84 and also we note that risk is additive so having parkinson's, multiple mia loma and that for somebody else they could have had a mild breakthrough infection but for someone medically vulnerable that could have led to a severe outcome. this results in people not mounting the same type of immune response as someone who is healthy so there was a study published in july that found that patients with mult

leana wen. author of "lifelines: a doctor's fight for public health."rse, anderson, we have to keep in mind that risk is additive. and general powell had at least two major risk factors for severe outcomes to covid-19. the first is age. an analysis of cdc data from august found that even if you are fully vaccinated, people in their 8 0z have a 15-times higher risk of dying of covid than a 50-year-old. and then, you have multiple myeloma which is a blood cancer that, by itself, substantially increases the risk of infection. and treatments to multiple myeloma, too, include chemotherapy, steroids, things that further suppress the immune system. and so, this is an -- an individual who unfortunately was at very high risk for contracting covid-19 by virtue of having a suppressed immune system that may not respond as well to vaccines. and then also being medically fragile and being more vulnerable to severe outcomes, sadly. >> and general powell was as we mentioned fully vaccinated, about to get a booster we're told. can you just give us some perspective on ho

leana wen is joining us, the author of the new book "life lines: a doctor's journey in the fight foror joining us. pfizer says its vaccine is nearly 91% effective against symptomatic coronavirus in kids ages 5 to 11. how significant are these findings? >> it's very encouraging, especially ahead of the fda's advisers' meetings next week. that's because previously all we had are the laboratory data showing that the vaccines, yes, they are safe, but also that they have a good antibody response. now we have real life data showing they're almost 91% protective, which is really good. that said, the study that's there is of just under 2,000 children. the advisers might say we need more data. but that needs to be balanced against the real public health thread of covid-19 to children. one in four new covid infections now are still in kids. there is real urgency to get these vaccines approved for the younger age group. >> there certainly is. cdc director rochelle walensky says when it comes to mixing and matching booster doses, it's a personal preference. how should americans make these import

leana wen. good morning. you have an article in the "washington post." say, number one, shots for younger kids. this could be sooner rather than later, which, of course, is good news. in learning this, do you think changes could come? could this official request for an eua, could that change the time line at all? >> i really hope not because the fda has already said that they're approached authorization for the vaccines for 5 to 11-year-olds with urgency. this is the reason why they already set an advisory committee meeting for october 26th, pending pfizer submitting their application on time. submitting it now, today, gives the fda enough time to review the data, and i think there's a real possibility we could have the first shots going into arms by the end of october if all goes according to plan. we have to remember, too, in theory, it's possible the fda could come back and say, we need more data or that maybe only a smaller group of children, perhaps those with higher risk may be immediately proved. this is not a given, but i do very much trust the f

leana wen. thank you for your time. >>> new this morning, abortion in texas is banned once again. overnight, a federal appeals court weighed in on the most restrictive abortion law in the country. placing a hold on the lower court ruling found that texas law was unconstitutional. remember, the law in texas bans abortions as soon as a doctor finds a fetal heart beat. as early as six weeks in cases. in other words, two weeks after a woman misses her period, before many women know they're pregnant. this law makes no exceptions for rape or incest and allows any private citizen to sue an abortion provider. this court of appeals was largely expected. the judge leans conservative. abortion providers worried this would get overruled or paused as it now has. all this means more women will continue to flock to nearby states like louisiana hoping to get their procedures before it's too late. >> it is a constant, constant ringing of phones. i can tell you the highlight of my day is the women moving appointments from the end of the month and squeezing them in next week. my nurse rearranged app

leana wen, author of "lifeline: a doctor's search in public health."e preparation going into this and the urgency at this point? >> i really want to commend the biden white house for being so proactive. they're not skipping steps. they're clearly saying we need to wait for the fda and the cdc to weigh in on the science, but there also shouldn't be a delay when it comes to the operations. it takes time to get the doses literally to state health departments, to get them to pediatricians' offices where many parents are used to going with their kids. also they are not used to giving doses or vaccines to younger children, and so preparing them and giving parents a plan where they will go once the vaccines are authorized. that's all really important, moderna boosters starting at age 40. so a much younger group. you've been working in clinic and getting a lot of questions on boosters, i know. do you agree with this move? is it time for healthy 40-year-olds to get a boost? >> yes, i've been saying this for weeks because the data have been very clear coming out

leana wen, the former health commissioner for the city of baltimore. 90.7% effective against symptomatic this data, and how does it compare to the vaccine's effectiveness in other age groups? >> this is good, kate. so i am reassured that there will at least be some real life effectiveness of this data ahead of the meeting next week. priestly pfizer said the vaccine was safe for younger children, which is great, and it appears to be effective based on antibody response, that there is a strong response. however, we didn't know how well it protected against symptomatic disease. so this new study in more than 2,000 children, the same study, but now they have results in these children, found there were six cases of covid-19 in children who got the placebo versus three cases in the children who got the actual sax. so more than 90% protective. although this is still a relatively small study, so i think we need to keep in mind that when the fda reviews the data next week, they may not come out with as full-throated a recommendation as they came out for older age groups and maybe a more limited r

leana wen joins us. we look at those numbers. heard coming out of that independent advisory board on tuesday of last week as to why they recommended the fda should authorize this vaccine for 5- to 11-year-olds. it's highly effective. what do you think could move the needle for some of these parents? >> well, i think the 30% of parents who are the hard no, i'm not sure that we can move them so easily because very likely they are the same individuals who have not gotten the vaccine themselves and it's unlikely they'll get their kids vaccinated. however, this wait-and-see group i'm optimistic about. i think many of these parents just want to know, they want a bit more experience with the vaccines, and i actually think that's okay. all parents want what's best for our children. there are some parents who are extremely eager to get their kids vaccinated. they want to be first in line for a number of reasons. maybe they have children with underlying medical conditions, maybe their kids are in schools without masks. maybe they have othe

leana wen. thanks for joining us. in the presentation from pfizer so far that gives you pause? if you were on the committee what would your question be? what would your vote be? >> right now the data all look very strong and very much in favor of giving authorization for this 5 to 11-year-old group because ultimately this comes down to weighing the risk versus the benefits and i think it needs to be said that children in this age group of 5 to 11 do become ill from covid-19. there have been 1.9 million cases of covid in this age group. over 8,000 children have been hospitalized and a third of them have ended up in the icu. 143 kids have died in this 5 to 11-year-old group so there is this very pressing and urgent case to be made to get vaccines available to this group. it looks like it's very effective. 95% effective in preventing against this amountic disease and the first in this four-step process and hopefully the fda will take on the adviser's recommendation and the next week the cdc and advisory committee there a
