we'll be starting with nbc's leanne caldwell on capitol hill. leanne, can you give us an update of what's happening now and how republicans feel about the election looming in the backdrop of all of this? >> reporter: hi, alex. that january 6 process is looming big in the background, but let's start with what's happening today. today is the first day of the new congress, the 117th congress, which just happened in the senate as vice president mike pence just swore in all 32 newly elected members to a new six-year term, including senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. over in the house, all members will be sworn in, and then after that, they have a very long day of electing the new speaker of the house. current house speaker nancy pelosi is expected to win that, but just by the slimmest of margins as she is facing the slimmest democratic majority with just 222 democrats, and because this vote has to be performed in person, they are going to extreme circumstances to get their members here, including more than a dozen democrats who have voted via pro

joining me now is leanne caldwell, peter baker, and co-author of "a very stable genius." impeachment essentially on the hill. there could be a vote on wednesday. democrats seem to be on board, where does the republican support for this stand? >> that is definitely the question. how much republican support, if any, these articles of impeachment will receive. of course it was introduced today. house democrats are holding a conference call with speaker pelosi right now. it just started two minutes ago. they're going to talk about this and we could, after this conference call get a clearer path of the way forward and what is going to happen, but as far as this one article of impeachment is concerned, it does talk about the president at the elipse saying we won this election by a landslide. going on to stay "if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a country any more." using this as evidence for incitement of insurrection. it also mentions the foal call that the president had with the georgia secretary of state on january 2nd about overturning those election resul

leanne caldwell joins us. leanne, is it official? >> reporter: it is official.just won her fourth term as speaker of the house. this is expected to be, perhaps, her last term. this is a term she is facing with a very slim democratic majority where democrats performed far worse than expected in the midterm elections. now, a little background about speaker pelosi. she has been in the top position as far as democratic leadership is concerned since 2003, so she has led this caucus for almost 20 years, for about 17 years now, and she's going to do it for another two years. she had the support of a wide swath of her caucus, including representative alexandria oca o ocasio-cortez and other members of the squad who were able to push her over that threshold to receive a majority of support. they could have easily thwarted her entire speakership bid, but they decided to get back behind her. this is just the beginning of a challenge as speaker of the house in a democratic caucus that is very diverse and will be jockeying for every last vote and every last issue and priorit

and nbc news correspondent leanne caldwell on capitol hill. senator mcconnell taking the floor as i understand it. what are democrats going to take full control of the senate and the committees? >> reporter: let's start with impeachment. the house impeachment manage letters walk the articles of impeachment to the senate tonight. that begins the process for this impeachment trial. the senators will be sworn in tomorrow. we also just learned today that senator patrick leahy, the president pro tem of the senate will preside over this trial. not chief justice john roberts. the reason is because it is the former president so they say that the chief justice doesn't need to be the presiding officer. instead, it will be a senator. the trial actually doesn't start for another two weeks. republicans say that gives the president time to stand up his defense and democrats say it gives them time to confirm more of the biden administration's cabinet. as far as the power sharing, it is how the senate operates, in a 50/50 senate. senator schumer and senator m

leanne caldwell on the hill, kristen welker at the white house.t will today's vote look like, will it have impact? >> stephanie, this is the first day of a week of trying to hold the president and his allies accountable for what happened last week. what's going to happen today is a democrat is going to call or offer what is called unanimous consent. that is to try to vote the resolution or push the resolution through the house without a vote. we expect a republican to block it so what's going to happen then is they're going to come back tomorrow, then, and then force a vote where members are going to have to go on the record, on if they support, calling on vice president pence to start the process of the 25th amendment. so that could be a very difficult vote for some of these republicans, and that's ultimately what speaker pelosi and house democrats want to do. they want to put republicans on the record, on what -- where they stand on this, and at first they want to put the onus on vice president mike pence to do something. he was in that chamber.
