i want to bring in leann caldwell. what you learned about where that bill stands and what's next for congress on this? >> on congress the response to the guilty verdict was mostly welcome. but democrats are warning that is not a replacement for legislative action to ensure more police accountability across the country. let's take a low pressure. >> justice is george floyd going home tonight to be with his family. we have a lot of work to do. because verdicts are not a replacement for policy change. >> so where does legislation stand? the house passed the george floyd policing bill last month. it does not have the ten needed votes in the senate for it to pass over here. the leader in the house representative karen bass has been attacking with a lead republican in the senate, senator tim scott. but these are very slow moving. there is not necessarily any timeline yet. perhaps this trial with click things into high gear. one of the issues most problematic still as it was last year when the bill passed the house is an issu

let's get to capitol hill correspondent leanne caldwell with the latest. what can you tell us? >> hey, joshua. there is some good news in this story late tonightch and that is the second officer who was injured because of the attack who went to the hospital has now been released earlier this evening. our colleague alex mo confirms this so there's very good news. the second officer who was injured has been released from the hospital and he is doing well, joshua. >> that is extremely good news to hear that one officer has been released. talk now about what the mood is like around washington and capitol hill. i'm sure that helps provide a little bit of relief after an extremely wrenching day yesterday. >> it absolutely does. just the slightest sliver of good news after a very tragic day yesterday with the death of one officer of capitol police. so what this is doing, this is going to continue the discussion over security, over how the capitol should proceed. of course after january 6 there was this intense security presence of 25,000 national guard that's now depleted to just a fe

leann caldwell and leann. thank you for getting up early to do this.rrific team of producers. they have gone through difficult days as well. the crews there inside and outside. garrett let me start with you as we mark 100 days. what are you feeling, frankly, about where we stand. are you surprised as how it has been on the front or back burner of our national conversation? and where do go from here? >> there was an ig hearing yesterday and covering that made me relive it. the police were set up to fail. they were not properly trained or equipped. they didn't have the proper intelligence. they didn't stand a chance against 10,000 people showing up at the capitol. so that frustrated me from a coverage and personal perspective. i think the other thing that i have been reflective on a lot in the last 100 days is the feeling of a loss of innocence of the capitol. a puncturing of the air. i told my girlfriend and my family doctor and friends on the 6th not to worry about me because i will be in the safest possible place. it changed the whole culture of that

. >> joining me now, nbc news capitol hill correspondent leann caldwell, leann, good to have you withhing going away for a long time. what did we learn in terms of procedural failures at today's hearing? >> reporter: as you mentioned capitol police overturned and put them in a posture january 6th that left them inadequately prepared for the intentions of the protesters who did breach the capitol. there were also questions about why more use of equipment was not used. let's listen to a question by the chair of the committee chair. >> among the findings in the record is that officers were directed by the capitol police leadership not to use all available equipment. >> it would be very difficult to say it would have absolutely turned the tide, but it certainly would have given them a better chance. >> reporter: the i.g. michael bolton also said it's not just the accessibility of the equipment, but those police officers, they need the training to be able to properly use the equipment. he also said that the intelligence gathering of the capitol police is increasingly important and it needs

. >> leann caldwell, lifting ourselves out of the weeds here, let's be very clear about this new decision by the senate parliamentarian in is not a blanket parliamentarian. voting rights et cetera on this work around through reconciliation if is very specific and targeted, right? >> that's right, let's take a step back here. democrats thought they had what the senate majority leader schumer got approval for yesterday was perhaps to use it a third time before the midterm election. so this gives them more options. senator schumer did not say he is going to go dhoun bath just yet, but it gives him the opportunity to use it if he needs to moving down the road. as you mentioned it can't be used on all pieces of legislation. things like voting rights cannot be passed under this. looking forward to structure they could likely use it on that plan. but some democrats say they want a bipartisan component bill and so they're not even on board yet. so democrats have this mechanism, but they need the support of all of the members to do it and they're not even there yet, hallie. >>> we mentioned two pi
