our team coverage begins with leann melendez. >> reporter: we were told that he is out of surgery and in the intensive care unit. we have this cell phone video to show you. the officer arrived about 10 to 15 minutes after the incident. police were able to get him here very quickly. they were blocking traffic and freeway on-ramping. you're seeing video of the moment the officer was taken off the ambulance. his wife, we are told, is by his side and other family members are coming from out of state the officer has been with the department for four years and assigned to tenderloin station. he is out of surgery and in the intensive care unit. >> reporter: obviously a lot of officers are also here at san francisco general hospital by his side. we're told that the officers from his station, the tenderloin station, have taken this very badly and are asking our viewers to pray for this officer. i'm live at san francisco general. abc7 news. >> indeed. thank you. >> sky 7 shows you all the activity surrounding the manlt earlier today as police search for the suspect. >> this is where it happened

abc 7 news reporter leann melendez is live with the story. >> reporter: court documents have used several names, marquez johnson and in today he corrected the judge and give a different name, william flanagan. in court he interrupted both his judge and attorney several times especially when the judge refused to lower his bail. police officers waited outside the courtroom as the man discharged of -- charged of running down elia lewis tan kel. a public defender was appointed. >> we do have the presumption of innocence and a fair trial in this country. >> reporter: bail was set at $10 million. flanagan himself objected saying he was a nonviolent offender. according to court documents last february, flanagan was convicted of possessing drugs and served, 67 days in jail. martin hall rin is with the police officers' association. >> he's out on release or probation and this happens again and again. >> reporter: on wednesday the injured offer was on bike l patrol assisting other officers and police say flanagan hit him and tried to get away. he was driving a stolen suv. flanagan got rid of the su

abc 7 news reporter leann melendez joins us with the story. >> reporter: today we heard from three witnesses that put the alleged shooter at pier 14. one of them had pictures of the defendant, the other two were taken to where he was arrested so that they could identify him. these two women were staying in a hotel across the street from pier 14 on july 1st, 2014 when they heard a single gunshot. both notice everyone running towards kate steinle except for one person. they identify him today as the defendant, jose garcia serrate. another witness testifying saying she was sitting in one of the swivel metal chairs on the pier, she was close to garcia serrate. she says he was beginning around and around in his chair looking at people and laughing. he thought he was odd but dismissed him as a homeless man. she then took beauty shots at the bay while taking pictures of garcia still sitting in the chair and kate steinle walking past him. it was those pictures that helped police find and identify him an hour later not far from pier 14. >> this is all about the steinle family. my office will do every
