and with more on the story, let's go to leanne gregg live in orlando. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. federal officials are trying to decide whether mateen's wife will face criminal charges. they say she's cooperating. noor zahi salman told authorities she was with her husband when he bought the ammunition and holster use in the bar to scope it out, but she told authorities she tried to talk him out of it. they are also talking to her family. her father-in-law says that his son-in-law applied to the police academy but was rejected. it was a lifelong dream and later filed a complaint with the florida law enforcement department claiming he was turned away because he was muslim. also, police are trying to piece together what happened that night, exactly where the shots were fired, whether people died instantly or whether they died while waiting for help to come hiding in the bathroom. eun, that's the latest. >> leanne, thank you. >>> like the other vent mass shootings in the country, the attack in orlando is once again during the debate on gu

nbc 10 national correspondent leann gregg is live for us in orlando. ng us up to speed on what's happening there right now. you're at a hospital, right? >> that's right, katy. 53 injured, 50 killed early on sunday morning. they're also focusing on omar mateen, what motivated him, what caused the 29-year-old american citizen to open fire. his father said that not long ago, he saw two men kissing and he became engaged and that may have caused him to target the gay nightclub. and back in 2013, it's the first time fbi agents first learned of mateen after his co-workers turned him in for terrorist comments he made. a year later they questioned him again about a brief relationship he had with a man who's an american to went to syria to become a suicide bomber. in both cases, they found no evidence, they say, that would link him directly to terrorism. so that investigation is continuing. he lived about two hours south of orlando and was a security guard. he moved to florida about ten years ago with his family from new york. this is only the beginning of what w

leanne gregg joins us liver now investigation and how this community is coping. good morning, leeann democratic democratic. >> reporter: you can see the roads are still blocked. they're continuing to try to collect evidence. there are reports now they say that he has sent messages on gay dating sights on line and was seen several times at the club where he opened fire. the weapons that he purchased, he bought them legally about a week before the shooting at a force peter gun shop. he was at one time on a federal watch list because of comments me about terrorist connections. if he had tried buy the agains then, the fbi would have been notified. but the investigation was over. agents say that they are confident that he was self-radicalized through the internet and the attack appears to be a homro terrorism. >> and all 49 victims in the attack have been identified. the youngest is just 18 years old. >> they were full of life enjoying a night of dancing. one was kimberly morris, the bouncer. her ex-girlfriend said she learned morris was killed in the attack when she

leanne gregg has more now on what investigators are learning this morning. >> reporter: investigatorshat they are getting a large amount of tips that they're following up on. they're restructuring a crime scene and reaching out for anyone who knew the gunman, they are retracing his steps going back months to try to figure out what he was doing, where he was going leading up to the attack. his wife remains a primary focus. no word on whether or if she will be charged. she told federal officials that she was afraid on saturday night before the shooting that her husband might be going ahead with his plan for the attack and that she tried to talk him out of it. but she didn't call the police and she didn't call the club. the officials also say at this point nothing suggests that there were any additional targets. there has been some discussion about that possibility. they also put an end to speculation and said mateen acted alone despite some of the witnesses who said they think there may have been some other shooters. they also said that there is no proof that he had scoped out other gay
