michael leavitt got the call hours ago. janine de la vega is on the campus now. you have the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are here in front of stanford professor's michael leavitt's apartment and he got a phone call this morning and when he first got it he thought it was the wrong person but when he called back he learned that and was overcome to learn he won the prize. he has been fielding interviews from them since. he is a physicist but is honored in the field of chemistry. they awarded him and those two the nobel prize in chemistry for laying the foundation for computer models used to understand and predict chemical processes. it stems back to research they did in the 70s there called groundbreaking. only so much could be calculated with classic fittics so chemists needs to use quantum fixes so make calculations and that is where computer programs helped them understand this. he played a part in this work. >> it is not like i now know this is going to solve all the world's problems, you never think that. it is more like each step leads
