lee crick. obviously impressed by his father because he followed in his and a new field, the education of military officers. i can recommend her book, pickets charge in, in military history and memory. published in 1997, by the university of north carolina press, it's -- it's a -- a wonderful piece. she has announced a book -- for may of this year. a book i tried to get my hands on to read it before i put the remarks together. i couldn't do it. my librarian couldn't find a copy of the book. it has the enormously intriguing title of -- with a sword in one hand. and i assume it is a study of civil war strategy and tactics. carol its the author of many articles, book reviews, conference papers, consultations, staff, prizes, and of course she is a wonderful teacher. i didn't try very hard to resist what i discovered at penn state has a website called, rate your teacher. it has headings, interest, helpfulness, and clarity. and carol ranked very high in all of those. there is also a category that, the

then we have lee again. lee looked at it, and somehow he had to break the grip of grant. somehow if he could, could he force grant to dispatch troops to weaken his army who is opposing lee? see, lee understood from the time he took command that yes, he had an opponent across a river, or on a battlefield, but the real enemy, the enemy the confederacy had to defeat was a civilian population of the north. he had to break their will to continue the war. if he broke their will to continue the war and to support the administration, the confederacy can only keep the attendants. keep in mind lee said it will only come with negotiations. the confederacy is not going to militarily conquer the north. to achieve independence, it has to be a negotiating table. if you read his comments, why he went into pennsylvania 1863, to achieve battlefield victory and free soil. writes about the political climate at the north, and looks at the political climate in '64, sees what everybody sees in a sense looming over all the major campaigns in 1864 was the northern presidential election that fall.
