lee. mr.ee was the dialysis patient and he's probably in his 80's and every time we would drive up to buchanan street, the hospital, mr. lee would say, "good job, fine driver, number one driver" and he would go like this [thumbs up gesture]. and then as brian would be helping him off the van, mr. lee, i heard him so often say, "brian, if anybody gives you any trouble you send them to me and i'll take care of them." and here great big old brian would say, "henry, you're the first one i would try to get help from." and he says, "the second one is elsa." [laugh] so we knew that we were being relied on by brian. a few weeks back, mrs. lee called brian early in the morning to tell him not to bother picking them up because they were already at the hospital. mr. lee was ill and she had taken him to the er. the next day or so, brian, on his lunchtime, found out that mr. lee had been admitted to the hospital and he went up to mr. lee's room and just stuck his head in just to say hello. and the minute m

mayor lee is a long time public servant. prior to becoming mayor, he served as city administrator where he focused on government efficiency and measures and reforms that reduced the size and cost of government. mayor lee first began working for the city and county of san francisco in 1989 as the investigator for the city's first whistle blower program. prior to employment with the city and county of san francisco, he was the managing attorney for the asian law caucus. i first met ed in 1992 when he became the executive director for the human rights commission and we were both 16. that's two decades ago, ed. i watched him soon become the director of city purchasing and then going on to become the director of public works. i think ed is the only mayor in city history that can carry tlau on the campaign promise to fill the potholes because he actually knows how and he's the only mayor in city history that can say he actually knows every single city street because his crews probably paved them. i have had the privilege of workin

so that's what lee hirsch's film was really all about. he's taken 5 families and he's documented it and yesterday over 3,000 of our students had a chance to view and many of them i think cried because they know it's happening in their own school site. and just because we get a label sometimes in san francisco that we're progressive or that we know better, it's happening also on our own turf to unacceptable levels. i wanted it share with you i'll be doing my part, i'll be doing more than my part. i've indicated to melinda and certainly ann marie and her coordination of this, we will be on the forefront with our school district and our administrators and our commissions to work together with the bay area to end this, to talk about it and expose it and to continue really carrying out a promise that we have made as leaders in our very dynamic bay area. we will not tolerate intolerance and we will expose it, get rid of it, and we will educate our kids, the next generation who will hopefully inherit a better world. we've got to set those condit

recently lee webb spoke with him about his new book "lincoln's battle with god." >> lee: steven, people may not know in his younger years, abraham lincoln was an eighth theist, an -- atheist and he rejected the very existence of god. tell us about that. >> lincoln's parents were caught up in the battles that swept the frontier, and it was very emotional. lincoln didn't have a great relationship with his father, so he started to turn away from their christian faith almost immediately. but then his reading turned him towards the writings of payne and volne, and he simply decided to become the village atheist. he challenged everybody's faith. he wrote small manuscripts against christianity. his friends said later it wasn't so much he didn't believe in god. he was mad at god. because he thought his mother's ill ji illigetmasy made him less. >> lee: how do you account for his conversion? what changed his thinking on the christian faith? >> unfortunately, what changed his thinking were a series of deaths. he lost his mother. he lost sons. he said at one point in his life he was haunted by the

at that point i timidly said i am senator lee. what? my name is mike lee. i represent a state called you saw. it resembles the chair. he finally got it. at that point the color drained from his face and he said i am terribly sorry. my name is steve and you if you want to report me. then he ran for the door. i felt bad for steve. i like steve. i chased after him to make sure he knew no hard feelings. every time i see steve in the hall i say hi, steve so he knows there are no hard feelings. only recently did it occur to me his name is probably not steve. smurfs so when i started this year, 2012, i was looking forward to two things. two steps that i believe would help us fundamentally transform our government into that kind of government or more closely representing -- resembling that kind of government our founding fathers envisioned for us. one of those events i knew whitaker most likely in june. probably toward the end of june. probably the last -- the last thursday of june. the other date that i recognized as potentially transform it of of our government,

(applause) >> thank you. thank you, susan and barbara, and thank you all for coming out today on this ribbon cutting on a very, very important center of research. we have never given up on this fight to end aids, and i am so thankful to be working with supervisor scott weaner and supervisor david campos and the board of supervisors. and we have through the budget year in and year out, and particularly this last couple years, where state and federal funds may have been waiting. we stood up and said, we are continuing this fight at the highest level to make sure we fund everything we can to end this aids epidemic. you know, i've been in the city working and the numbers came out. there were 20,000 people that died of this dreaded disease. there were over 20

sherman, grant, lee, hood, all -- about -- to give you a harder number, there are some -- there are few famous nonwest pointers, wade hampton, stonewall jackson is a west pointer, two-thirds of major generals involved, are veterans at least of the regular army, and the regular army really is dominated by west point. west point is about -- it's not only that most officers in the regular army are graduated of west point. it's kind of the focal point of much of the armies professionalism. so when they do for example, review boards for things like new tactics they'll use the cadet as guinea pigs and have them march around and use thest point library. they have a -- the only historical library available where this stuff is at. but if we think of the big three, lee, grant, sherman, stonewall jackson, longstreet, all west pointers and all have gone through that experience. >> host: when it comes down to the civil war you have generals on the south, generals on the north who have been train in the same ways. what does that do to some of the conflicts? >> guest: for me the most important thing t

the whole innovation model that supports mayor lee's efforts. it's being able to adapt to the change of technology. all of our supporters and know this and between the mobile apapps industry and you will hear more from james jones and talk about communication technology and everybody in the room has a hand held computer and think about ten years ago we didn't have that so the change in technology is important. you can see what we're focused on in the 35 growing occupations in san francisco. all of that is incorporated into our curriculum and make it adaptable. the partnership with sf tech and city college is there and you heard about jaun going back to school and we are emphasizing placement we want all the folks have the tools that they need including degrees and the advanced credentials to be successful in this industry. tech sf we're trying to align with the industry trends as you see on the board. the young lady talked about computer engineer. there is system analysis. there is graphic design which is a rich industry in this city as it relat

our david lee miller is there, david lee, any reduction in the rocket fire? >> reporter:-- we're having audio problems with david lee miller. as soon as we work out the technical difficulty of course we'll bring him back. we're been hearing a lot and you just heard me mention about the iron dome. and here is more on that. we've gathered key facts about the weapons system. interdesigned to intercept short ranging missile threat. an israeli company raphael advanced defense began developing iron dome nearly six years ago and the united states helped pay for it by providing 2.5 million dollars to buy additional iron dome systems parts. and now, we've been able to work out that technical problem with david lee miller. let's go back out, again, i mentioned it's early monday morning. well, we're going to go back and forth. it's very he difficult when you're in that kind of a zone there, it's early, it's dark, and we're trying to work through the technical difficulties there. but we've had to see him don protective gear the past few days, a lot of of action where dav

[applause] >> thank you mayor lee. we are honored by your kind words and partnership, and now i would like to introduce anne wilson, president of united way bay area to come up and say a few words. >> thank you steven. this is a really great celebration want congratulations to you and congratulations to west field and congratulations to the city and congratulations to all your teammates who are here that have great jobs with a great company and as the united way target is a partner not just here in the bay area but all across this country. target teammates participate in the community and with many nonprofits and last year teammates give over $15 million to the local united ways and that is no exception here in the bay area. we value the partnership greatly. congratulations on 50 years. the bay year is celebrating 90 years this year so we have been partners all those years and the tradition conditions. mr. mayor speaking of partnerships one partnership that we were all a part of that you make didn't think is the summer

[applause] >> thank you mayor lee. it's an honor to be here and it's great that we did two things in the month of october. we're reinforcing that san francisco is the innovation capital of the world and the giants are going to win the world series, so october is a great month for san francisco. i represent the 350 plus members of sf city which is basically a tech chamber of commerce that we formed in january of this year, and we have 350 member companies, many of those representatives are here. and those 350 companies represent probably 90% of the tech population of san francisco, and it's the tech companies who are doing the most hiring right now. we will fill over 6500 jobs this year, and even more jobs next year, so it's incumbent upon sf city with its partnership with tech sf to match this year and next year's 6500 job opportunities to san franciscans who have been trained and get them placed into the tech companies and it's a logistics job but it's very, very possible, and the sf city staff is going to go out, ask

[cheering and applauding] >> thank you, mayor lee. and in addition to the stimulus money that we have to thank president obama for, we also have to thank him for his wise choice of the director of the white house office of national aids policy, dr. brad colfax.
