lee was born in taiwan and educated at carnegie melon. the subtitle of your book, china, silicon valley and the new world order. and when you read that you can see the font sizes are getting smaller and smaller and you begin with china. how do those three intertwine? >> guest: well, i worked in silicon valley and understand it silicon valley thinks. i respect greatly the innovative breakthrough innovations that it come from the silicon valley, but having spent about 15 years total working in china, i also think china has developed some amazing business models, new ways of innovation and entrepreneurship that are worthy to be chronicled and studied and respected equal footing. in particular, china is in a very unique position with respect to ai, having so much great entrepreneurship, ai engineering talent, and huge amounts of data. china is inevitably going to become or already is one of the two superpowers in ai. so i wanted to emphasize that message so that people in the u.s. and elsewhere are aware that the future of the ai technology w

i went to washington lee high school i went to west point like robert e lee, i live about 70 feet fromis boyhood home right now. for me he was the example or of military and battlefield quality and leadership. it's complex to write about robert e lee now. i have a complex lectureship with his memory. but i didn't think i could honestly write a book about leaders without addressing the one that i had probably spent the most time in my life thinking about. >> you said that you sort of reevaluated robert e lee and actually there's a portrait your wife gave a believe that you thrown out. why is that? >> my wife of 41 years in movement back and when i was a second lieutenant she spent $25 and bought me this painting of robert e lee. you get quite a painting for $25. framed. it really was just a print of a more famous painting and they painted clear acrylic to make it look like it was flaming. what we had in our quarters everywhere we lived and i loved it because this was the symbol of what i thought about leadership, when people came in they would say, this is what stan mcchrystal admires a

lee incredibly aggressive. lee was imaginative, fearless, but also careless. he cared about very little. he certainly didn't care about his men in a weird kind of way, which strangely enough made him a talented general because particularly if you're the confederates, you've got a small force. you've got to fight. you've got to win, and you've got to expend men and you have to do it with a carelessness. lee was the right sociopath i would say using modern terms for the job. he also cared -- not only did he not care about slaves, he didn't care about the institution of slavery. he mentioned slavery about twice. he says really mundane things. again really speaks to who he was. i mean, he was a cruel slave holder, who was fighting to uphold the institution of slavery, but it didn't even engage him intellectually. he had grown up with slavery. slavery had been part of the south. should be part of the south, end of story, he wasn't going to give it any thought. no abolitionist was going to penetrate that wall and get him to have any innovative thoughts on that. thos
