vic lee is live at city hall with new developments. vic?s conducted by the police union, and the timing of its release is not coincidental. as you said, the issue of tasers is on the agenda of the police commission, which meets here at city hall in about an hour. a recent survey reveals that 68% of people in san francisco favor tasers for the cops. a marin county deputy sheriffin. the police union released a radio spot after getting a survey it commissioned which shows 68% of those polled supports arming officers with tasers. only 14% of the 500 san francisco voters surveyed said they oppose the electronic controlled devices. 18% were not sure. our informal survey found similar views. >> it's less lethal than shooting everybody. >> i think it's taken too long to get them armed with tasers. >> definitely. >> reporter: the police union president says the poll validates his position that all the officers should be carrying tasers as an alternative when possible to lethal force. >> right now, officers go from a baton to a bullet. >> reporter: s

today, city officials and mayor lee are responding. good afternoon. i'm kenny choi. >> and i'm michelle griego. officer jason lai resigned from the police department earlier this month after dozens of offensive texts were sent by him and to him. jackie ward has details. jackie? >> reporter: michelle, we didn't see every single text message that was sent but saw enough to make anyone uncomfortable. the public defender obtained the pages of unedited text from march of 2015 to august 2015 and it included derogatory terms about blacks, indians, hispanic and gay people and even made a joke about internal affairs reading the texts. >> when we're talking about bias precincts and racial profiling, there is a direct connection to these associations that are being made by officers being implicit and explicit of what ask happening -- is happening on the streets. >> reporter: the department said they do not reflect the department as a whole and officer lai has resigned. in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. >> jackie, the big question is what's next? >> reporter

this is the streaming video provided by the city tonight. vic lee has more on this new development. >> reporter: a recent survey reveals that 68% of san franciscans favor tasers for our cops. a marin county deputy sheriff is using a taser in this video. that's what the police commission is considering, in its review of lethal force policies. the police union released the radio spot after getting results of a survey it commissioned which shows 68% of those polled supports arming officers with tasers. only 14% of the 500 san francisco voters surveyed said they opposed the electronic control devices. 18% were not sure. our informal survey found similar views. >> better than shooting somebody. >> it's taken too long to get them armed with tasers. >> hope to cut down shootings. >> reporter: police union president martin hall oh ran said the polls validate his position that all the officers should be carrying tasers as alternatives if possible to lethal force. >> right now sfpd officers go from a baton to a bullet. >> reporter: so far two of the police co

henry lee found out the city's public defender is looking into past arrests of those four officers. >>> last year, a similar scandal involved 14 officers. many of who kept their jobs because the city rated too long to fire or discipline them. on friday, the public defender asked the district attorney for copies of the text, a list of arrests and police reports that were written in the last ten years by the officers in the latest investigation. >> under the law, the district attorney is obligated to provide any evidence which might shed some question as to credibility of police officers, racial bias is an important issue when you're trying to determine whether an officer's believable or not. so if you have evidence that in this case officers engaged in bigotry, that's something that would be admissible in court. >> the newest controversy is the result of an investigation into this officer, jason lai. he's not -- he had been accused of sexual assault during the investigation, prosecutors said he sent race district and homophobic texts to other officers including the retired lieutenant.
