"i will get stronger" she writes. "i will return." associated press reporter amanda lee myers obtained a copy of the book before it scheduled releas. >> it's the first time we're hearing about the behind-the-scenes struggles. >> reporter: all the book except for that last page was written by giffords' husband, retired astronaut mark kelly who the a.p. says details an agonizing wait. although giffords was shot in january, he says she couldn't comprehend what happened until march, months later. when he asked her what she remembered kelly says gabrielle giffords' reply came in just three words: shot, shocked, scary. but what kelly tried to keep from her that day was just how many people had been hurt. giffords, he writes, knew that he was holding something back and insisted on knowing. when he told her 13 people had been wounded and six people had been killed

now, "48 hours" and "vanity fair" have uncovered new evidence and lee cowan reports the los angeles countyriff's department reopened the case today. >> i believe that robert wagner was with her right up until the moment. >> reporter: dab necessary davern says he was there that night as the captain of the "splen dour" the yacht that carried actress natalie wood and her husband robert wagner out to sea on a thanksgiving weekend. for 30 years the story had been that wood fell overboard, no one knew how or when. but davern tells cbs' 48 hours he believes wagner did know and did little to help. i said to robert wagner "maybe i should turn on the search light" and he said "don't do that." >> reporter: the next day woods' body-- clothed in a nightgown and down jacket-- was found in the waters off ca cataa island. the coroner ruled it an accident. wagner and the captain told investigators the last time they saw wood she was below decks in her stateroom getting ready for bed. but what's different about the captain's story now is he says wagner and wopping arguing. >> yelling, things being thrown ab

cbs lee cowan reports. >> the information we received made us want to take another look at the case.reporter: with that, a mystery that has gripped hollywood for almost 30 years. the death of screen icon natalie wood is back in the headlines and one of the reasons is this man. >> i believe that robert wagner was with her up until the moment she went into the water. >> reporter: dennis davern was the captain of robert wagner's boat, the splendour. it was an accident said the coroner back then, but davern reveals that wagner was arguing with wood and he not only knew his wife had fallen overboard, he claims he did little to help. >> i said to robert wagner, maybe i should turn on the search light? he said, "don't do that." >> reporter: investigators won't say what new leads they have, but did answer one question. >> is robert wagner a suspect? >> no. >> reporter: wagner admitted to the argument in a 2008 auto biography. but told cbs "sunday morning" back then, his wife's death was an accident, nothing more. >> we were so in love and we had everything, and in a second, in a second, it w

lee cowan reports. >> reporter: gary giordano was the only suspect in the disappearance of robyn gardnererican tourist who took off to aruba for a vacation with gee or diordano a meeting him online but she was never seen again. prosecutors immediately pointing the finger to giordano but never charged him with a crime. after a hundred days in custody, an aruban judge said enough is enough. giordano could be a free man as early as next week. all along he maintained that gardner had been swept out to sea as they were snorkeling near sundown. his attorney called it a tragic accident, nothing more. but prosecutors were suspicious saying they found enough circumstantial evidence to doubt his story and wanted more time could gather more evidence. but without a body and not much of a motive, a judge decided the time for prosecutors to harden up their case have come and gone and leaving gardner's family looking for more. >> casey jordan, a legal analyst, joins us. do you think giordano will walk away from this next week? >> i do. they have until tuesday. they have appealed that decision and relea
