lee jordan is here to explain.>> reporter: today i talked to the head of the department of surgery and akron's children's hospital. he was not involved in the case, but did say the injury is very rare. it was during this play last friday night that the 17-year- old took a kick to the gut. he walked off the field on his own and was checked out at university hospital. he was released on saturday but died on sunday. the cause of death, a small bowel laceration which caused peritonitis to develop. it's an injury a cat scan can miss. john crowe says that is often only one patients get sick on years of experience, you can't minimize how sick a ruptured bowel can make you. sometimes how subtle the presentation is. >> reporter: dr. chrome said it's entirely possible jackson seemed fine when he went home. there is often a delay in development of more severe symptoms. dr. chrome said this type of injury is seen in 10-20 out of rolls reversed -- roles reverse for 30 year veteran 911 dispatcher. this week he needed help. his coworkers brought him back to life. we have the touching details from cle
