hundredsfairs across the country -- big cities to small towns, convention centers to american legion posts you have not been to one of these events, i strongly encourage you to do so. there you will see firsthand the quality of these returning servicemen and women, employers who understand the value and legionnaires dedicated to improving their lives. the men and women who fought for this country should not have to fight for a job when they return home. veterans, their families, and the american legion will keep working to revive our nation's economy. efforts to improve opportunities through licensing and it credentialing, through job fairs and business development must continue in earnest. for many newly minted veterans the ability to get a job and decent income has been diminished because of the sacrifices made in uniform. that is why we simply must come up with a solution to our problems that has been us for years. unfortunately, it has gotten worse -- the va claims backlog. i would challenge anyone in this room to recall a time when the american legion did not come before this congress

[applause] >> admiral jonathan grew up in a pittsburgh suburb in butler pennsylvania. the son of a steel worker he was the third of six children. he was the all-american kid growing up. he worked not won a paper route but to. he was on the swimming team, student council, a member of the national honor society and the arcuri club, and to top it off he and his buddies were also members of the major club, a group that offered them a return at a ball game or at the rotary club dinners. accepted at the university of pennsylvania, the military academy at west point and the united states naval academy, she made a smart choice following in his footsteps in the naval academy. the study of nuclear power to serve as a submarine officer. the open the academy from 1975 and you will find a few tidbits about the admiral. it describes him as a man always colorful and religiously nonacademic

legion. i am the eight district historian, and appointed commander of post 36. the president of the veterans affairs commission, eddie ramirez, i had similar training in organizational development and strategic planning. i attended most, not all, of the veterans affairs commission meeting this year. i videotaped several for historical reasons. one of the things that i see the commission can really use is an element of team strategic planning. the veterans community itself is very fragmented. i am a member of the american legion, veterans for peace, and amvet, and none of them work together. many times and have an internecine community where the veterans work against the best interest of the group rather than towards it. i kind of already and doing the job. i attend the meetings. i will continue to attend the meetings in support of the veterans affair commission in any way possible. to the biggest problems plaguing both the san francisco community and the veterans community is homelessness and suicide prevention problems. yesterday at approximately 2 p.m., at vet
