michael skelly was trying to figure out if legionella bacteria was in the drinking water of his patients. he was skeptical when city health officials quickly ruled it out. >> this is not about water towers and our drinking water. there is no worry about our water supply. >> it makes more intuitive sense that the water you're exposed to more closely and regularly inside your apartment would be more of a problem than some mist that's coming over the city from a couple of miles away. >> reporter: a veteran infectious disease specialist at lincoln hospital decided to test his theory on his own, taking samples from the apartments of >> i found that six of the apartments had legionella in their portable water. >> reporter: before the test results came back, dr. skelly was fired. hospital officials say he misused his position and violated privacy laws by accessing information of patients not under his direct care in order to carry out an experiment. he says that's not true. he says he asked each and every patient for permission to visit their home and test their water. >> if they agreed to have
