leigh glaser has been tracking hurricane sandy on live doppler 7hd. leigh? >> leigh: very, very serious, dangerous storm system, not only because you have the hurricane coming onshore but an area of low pressure developing to in the north and east, and that's going to sweep in, causing this to become a super storm. live doppler 7hd, you see the actual -- it's not really a well-defined eye but you can see the counterclockwise spin of the system. the width of this storm, incredible, at over 500 miles there, and as we go ahead and take another look at this system, right now over 200 miles southeast of cape hatteras. still moving to the northeast. by tomorrow night it is going to start to make a jog towards the northeast. possible landfall tomorrow night near atlantic city, spend after that, folks, looks like the other cold storm in the -- canada is going to new jersey with this, -- is going to merge with this, making this a superstorm tuesday. we'll be telling you flights cancelled already. this is really going to impact the eastern half of the united states. >

we beginning our team coverage of the developing storm with leigh glaser. i understand sandy is expected to come ashore tomorrow? >> leigh: late monday night, throughout the morning hours on tuesday, and looks like atlantic city could be the place where the superstorm makes landfall. let get to live doppler 7hd. you can see -- we're going to put the satellite on there as well. cape hatteras, north carolina, 50 miles-per-hour winds, virginia beach, virginia as well. 45 miles-per-hour, and you can see the rain bands churning and moving inland. the width of the storm, over 500 miles long. right now it is 270 miles southeast of cape hatteras. winds still category 1. moving to the northeast. by late tomorrow afternoon, early tuesday morning, it will jog towards the northeast, and as i mentioned, landfall anywhere from atlantic city to new york and all eyes are on that. we call this a super storm because we're going to have those feeder bands moving in off the ocean towards the west, and then we have another system to the northeast that will twitch the winds back

nbc's danielle leigh is about 100 miles south of there at cape may. daniel danielle, what's it looking like there now? >> reporter: right now all of those rains i was standing in yesterday have been replaced by heavy, heavy winds. we are getting tossed around out here. when we were inside our hotel, it sounded as if we were going to lose some windows. sounded like banging and claterring around. if you take a look, all the boards have held. that's a lot better than other communities can stay. parts under water. when you take a look at this video of damage across the new jersey coast, we're talking about streets under water, downed power lines, downed trees. and this is just the damage we've been able to get a look at. when the sun rises, we'll be able to get a sense of the damage. across the north, more than 7 million people without power, at least a dozen people have died as a result of this storm, and large parts of these communities in significant damage. early reports, they're guessing we're talking about $10 billion to $20 billion worth of damage,
