leigh martinez is at the scene to explain the series of events that unfolded overnight. >> reporter: good morning. the police were here all night and morning. we are on the other side of the yellow tape. neighbors were told to shelter in place as the incident unfolded around 9:00 last night. the neighbors on the streets reported a man acting bizarre and challenging people to fight. when the officers arrived the man retreated into a home to arm himself with a shotgun and authority said he made suicidal statements and fired the gun. the crisis negotiator was brought in to calm him down but two hours after the first 911 call came in a fire started in the home of the suspect. he came out holding the shotgun prompting officers to shoot and kill him and one neighbor said he heard multiple gunshots.>> i did not see anything but i heard the gunshots, and there was one, and then there was a pause, and maybe six after that.>> reporter: the livermore police say that no officers were injured and no one else was found inside the house. the fire grew considerably large and a witness said it spread

leigh martinez is live now with an update on the police investigation. >> reporter: yeah. so first we heard from oakland fire department who say the off duty firefighters were attending an event at the brewery t was at the brewery. and as they were leaving the event, they were confronted by a group with of men. and both were shot. witnesses say they saw the two victims on the opposite side of taylor on this side of the street right here outside of the taylor street market. san jose police now say that they have detained people but they're still trying to determine if there is more than one suspect. now, just after 9:30 last night, police were called out to a report of a shooting on the 300 block of taylor street. the victims were shot outside of the taylor street market. one oakland firefighter who was 30 years old was later pronounced dead at regional medical center. the second firefighter, 26 years old, had a single gunshot wound and was in stable condition at valley medical. oakland firefighters were seen early this morning heading to the south bay in a somber processio
