leigh martinez has more. >> reporter: yes, eight bay area cities saw crime rise but the property crime is down. in two cities, fremont and hayward, they increased in both. the fbi found that violent crime was increasing across the nation but four bay area cities are past the national average. those cities are fremont, berkeley, hayward and san jose. fremont topped the list with nearly 25% increase in violent crime. fremont has a population of of a little more than 230,000 people and last year the city reported 420 violent crimes. across america, the fbi reports murder rate were on the rise. 47 homicide last year in san jose. the city has been open about its need to hire more police. santa clara, walnut creek, palo alto, los gados and san francisco all had double digits decreases in property crime. according to the fbi study, nationwide, most city police departments have about three police officers per thousand residents. here in the bay area, particularly with san jose, they have less than 1 officer per 1000 residents. so there is a need here to hire more police. >> all right, leigh ma
